Ive given up trying to find a cheap recorder and ive narrowed my options down to these
two, anyone with any tips or ideas on either? I know there's a difference in price between
them, zoom is going for around 159 and olympus for around 220, is the difference worth it?
thanks!

I sold my H2 and got the LS10. The H2 was fine for catching songwriting ideas but the
mic's weren't really up to anything more sophisticated than that. The LS is much nicer -
good mic's, metal case as opposed to plastic, better laid out. The only issue so far is
the little rubber plug which acts as a door for the USB connector is hanging loose, hardly
a problem.

Olympus has been making dictation devices for 30 yrs Their build quality is v good Zoom some what unknown, but my mates rate them Metal is better than plastic on the
road imho However save up for a Sound Devices recorder, fantastic build,a proper
''tape recorder''.

I was impressed with what results the Zoom can get, but the Olympus sounds definitely
better to me.
This is quite a handy page:

If your budget will stretch a bit then definatly look at the zoom h4. The stereo
condensers are really good. I did a couple of stereo recordings in a venue and the on
board mics sounded much better than the pair of £300 Rode's i plugged in!

Blimey, id decided on a H2 but after seeing these posts it's the LS 10 that's coming
first. My use for it will be to put ideas down with an acoustic guitar or piano and voice
and to record band practice. Any other suggestions? i wish i could remember things better
and then i wouldnt need anything! but that's not going to happen! Thanks for all your
comments!

I've recorded band rehersals on my ls-10 - works well (although wach the placement) as a
guide thingy I know it works well on softer instruments - so your acoustic songs
should record very well My students have used it to record outside (birds, wind
and a motorway!!) arond the school (fire alarms, phones, tannoy etc) and ensembles (which
involved recording them all bashing the hell out of kitchen equipment following a graphic
score!)...and they could use it themselves with no issues so easy and great
results!
