I noticed this appeared on the web store today. Did not look too exciting but that may be
unfair as I have not had time to look in detail yet.

There's a few new features there that would be useful. The flexi-time and audio quantize
features look like an easy way to fix out of time tracks, plus the comp feature seems to
be enhanced. It now finally appears that you can make (written) notes on
aspects of a project, hopefully these can be made easily and as stickies. I always thought
this was a big oversight. Upgrade from 8 seems to be US$199, which is not
insubstantial. Bob

Soundtrack Pro 3 in there as well...
The UK store stills says 4-6 weeks for the

Had a read through the blurb, can't see whether they have sorted the multi-instrument
volume/pan issues or not. Bounce in place ... goooood Flexitime, what about
pitchtime!

Wow! A lot of new features which seem to be inspired by ProTools. Avid/Digidesign should
be scared. A lot of people are ready to jump ship.

Oops, misread the full cost price (£399 not £339), so I suppose the upgrade cost
is reasonable.
Still £99.00 would have be better - we are in a recession!!!

Looks like theyv'e dropped PPC support too... Minimum System Requirements
to Install All Applications * Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of RAM (2GB or more highly recommended) * Display with 1280-by-800
resolution or higher * Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later * QuickTime 7.6 or
later * DVD drive for installation

Yeah, that was always gonna happen. Apple have effectively shelved all PPC
development now, anything new is almost certainly going to be Intel-only, including
applications, and the OS.

This might sound a bit harsh, but that's fair enough really - seeing as Snow
Leopard has dropped PPC support.
At the risk of sounding ruthless, I do believe
that Apple's approach to dropping older technologies makes for a better, more stable,
higher performance system.

Looks like a fair deal for the upgrade considering all the plugins etc. Shame
about Intel only but it makes sense with S L out in September...

No, not yet. Not much documentation is online yet. I'm waiting for the "What's new in
LP9" document.
According to MF, a buglist document isn't planned, so we'll have
to do the usual major-new-version-hunt-your-favourite-bugs-dance as per usual...

I've had a quick look & it doesn't mention anything about being 64bit native. Considering OSX 10.6 will be, it's a shame that Apples pro software packages are not
too.

Hmmm. That is a shame. I'd love a
native 64 bit Logic with some 64 bit third party plugins able to use as much RAM as they
need, rather than just using multiple instances of EXS24s.

Interesting stuff. Just been looking on the Apple site and it looks very groovy. I assumed
that there wouldn't be anything until Snow Leopard though and hope that it will be another
of those 'launched before the OS and suddenly perks up after a .1 release' type things.
It's good for me - I don't see Cubase 4 surviving the transition to 10.6 so
it's rapidly approaching time for me to look at Logic.
Is it me, or is it more
expensive this time..?

Plugins can be scaled from 100% to 200% in size, and there is a default size preference
(set to 100% by default).
Good for those with small plugins and large

New bounce options:
- Bounce 2nd cycle pass. The bounce process takes two
repetitions of the cycle range into account, with the creation of the bounce file starting
at the second repetition. This is useful if you want effect tails (from the first cycle
pass) to be added to the start of the bounce file.
- Add effect tail. The
bounce file is extended as far as necessary to include any effect tails.
Bounce-in-place also looks rockin' - lots of options, looks to be very well implemented.
You can BIP regions, whole tracks, or *all* tracks in the project. Great to consolidate a
version of your project to audio files for archival or project sharing...

Apple doesn't do much in the way of bugfixes for Logic, but they are great at getting

Don't get me wrong -- the shiny new keys
they plunked into Logic 9 seem like they'll be great, but I already do not use Pro Tools,
so the Pro Tools like stuff just does not interest me all that much. Also, Version 8
still needed some fixes, apparently. Not that I have noticed the bugs much anyhow since
about 80% of the time I now use Live, not Logic (even though I've owned Logic and upgraded
regularly for the past decade).

I agree with you - I'm just being positive
because I think this update is far more relevant than the update from v7 to v8. But that's
a lot to do with things that should have been done when v8 came out...
I
genuinely believe that Apple isn't that bothered about the Pro Apps anymore. Apple is not
the same company it was 10 years ago. They are not catering to a creative minority any
more - they are making billions and billions from the iPod, the iPhone, the iTunes store
and the App Store.
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone he said it was 5
years ahead of other smartphones. But has Logic fallen 5 years behind other audio apps?
Possibly...

I can see how this update isn't going to satisfy everyone. But if Apple had come
round my house and asked me what editing features they could give me to make MY workflow
better then this is what I would have ended up with... It's years since that happened!

The new features are looking great. Yet the update kind of leaves a bad taste behind.
On first impression it sounds right when people say that it’s only logical that
PPC is not supported anymore. But when you really think about it, then it has nothing to
do with logic, let alone with 'fairness'. Yes, it's only logical that 10.6
won’t support the PPC platform. There are very good technical reasons for that. But
Logic 9 doesn't require 10.6. so I don't see the 'logic' of not supporting PPC's here at
all. 'Easy' is a better word and I regard it as unAppleish and contrary to everything
'Pro' stands for. Ironically it was Apple that made a big deal about the ease of
developing for PPC and Intel at the same time. Granted, after 10.6 that argument won't
stand any longer, but prior to 10.6 (and that’s where we are and where Logic 9 is!), it
does.
In my book Apple used to be the company that backed their systems for
quite some time. The G5 was replaced almost 3 years ago. 3 years isn’t yesterday, but
it’s not really a long time either.
Now let’s apply a margin of
appreciation here and say I understand that 10.6 is absolutely essential for errrr Logic
9.1 (that maybe will never see the day of light). Then maybe the term 'fair' is applicable
for not supporting PPC's anymore. But that assumption would mean that early buyers of
Logic 9 (and later buyers that run it on 10.5) will be left in the cold too later on in
the sense that they would be obliged to upgrade their systems to 10.6 in order to run the
Logic 9 they’ve already paid for. This wouldn’t be a fair scenario either.
Things are worse when you consider the (almost no) update policy (or lack of policy) of
version 8. It’s quite ridiculous to leave buyers in the cold that have offered bug
reports and whatnot. Now when those people are running 8 on a PPC system, they will be
left in the cold all the more.
Before people start to tell me that Logic
always has had bugs and that there are workarounds: I know. I’ve been a long time,
content, user and I love this DAW, period. But it seems that it is more and more accepted
that software companies leave you with a product that hasn’t been fixed enough (read
carefully: I don’t expect a flawless, 100 % bug free product, although maybe I should)
and then move on with a new version. I never had that feeling with the Apple software I
use, but this time I do.
The whole ‘not supporting PPC = logic / fair’
argument is flawed. Only when Logic 9 would require 10.6, then that argument would be
valid. Not supporting PPC is 'easy'. Judged on its own it's cheap and unprofessional,
judged in the light of the (lack of) bug fixing history of 8 it's rude and bordering on an
unacceptable commercial practice.

Someone on a forum (ie how accurate it is I don't know) said that Logic 9 still is a UB
application, just the PPC part is unsupported. I don't know how true that is though...
Edit: confirmed. It will run on PPC machines.

I think that Merlin has hit the nail on the head. Apple has, to me at least, become a
company adept at rolling out shiny new cash cows to the masses. It's a shame that this
ethos now seems to have pervaded Logic and perhaps it's other Pro Apps.
I've
spent a fortune with Apple over the years but I am (come SL) and Logic 9 going to be
totally on my own. Outmoded and non-upgradable. I'll be running L8 on PPC. Now, I could
reach for my violin (if I had one, if I played!) or I could just make the point that the
real scary fact of that is that - It Didn't Really Take That Long To Happen.
As Pro-Users and serious "Hobbyists" (I actually hate that word, but you guys know what
I mean right?) What we all need is a company that matches the financial and creative
investment of its customers; and that means proper bug fixes and a measured rate of real
development. There's no denying that as I hand over my cash next time, it would be
comforting to feel that I wouldn't need to do it again the following week too.

As a recent upgrader from Express to Studio, I'm a little disappointed at having to fork
out another 200 eu for this upgrade. For Express users the 100 eu tag is not so bad, as
the flextime tools alone are worth that.
Studio users don't get a great deal
above Express users it seems, apart from the performance tools and upgraded helper
programs. Not that the major improvements to the rather clunky Soundtrack Pro aren't
exremely welcome though.
Another gripe is that a lot of the new stuff is
guitar/band - oriented, which is great for guitarists, but not really worth much to the
rest of us who either don't play or don't compose guitar music.

+1 Merlin.
excellent post. my sentiments exactly.
Logic 7 user on
PPC. I've survived not upgrading to 8 so I'm sure I can survive 9. Not ready to give up
my fully functioning workhorse G5. And not ready to join the Logic 8 forums awash with
crack heads wanting to make beats with no manual and no desire to read it.

Hi
Does the normal installer work on a PPC, or is it necessary to bypass the regular Suite

(I'm trying to find out if the new Final Cut Pro 7 is the same).
