how do I recapture my audio appropriately new
      #785133 - 06/11/09 05:15 AM

hey ppl wats poppin... i wanted a mastering solution so i purchased the ultramizer dsp 1424p. I use the mbox 2 mini interfae. i thought i could run the outs of my mbox to the ultramizer, process the material and record it back into my DAW, Before maximizing the audio records nicely but whenever i maximize the audio it is distorted. I thought the ins were turned up too much but even at half way i got the same result. I'm wondering if if i have too resort to buying a dedicated hard disk burner or is it that i'm just not doing something properly... or would a change of interface help. thanks in advance for the help

1)Confirm what is coming out of the Ultramizer is clean to the ear, by plugging them into an amp with a volume control
or into the back of a headphone amp. If it's clean it's something to do with an overloaded input stage on the Mbox
or an A/D input overload (i.e. digital overload)

2)Try switching the pad in (though what you are doing should not increase signal levels that much)

3)Make sure the gains are down

Make sure that your output meters are not going into the red (hitting 0dBFS) on the Ultramizer. There may be a brickwall
limiting function to stop this, but whatever happens make sensible judgements as to whether your processing is improving the sound or not.(by monitoing through the Mbox headphones or via the outputs)

It could be the inputs on the Mbox are expecting signals reffed -10dBV and you are driving it with an output stage ref'd to +4dBu (about 11dB difference roughly) and once you maximize you are putting out +20dBu or similar which the Mbox is finding too hot.

cheers

i've tried all those suggestions in the process but to no avail. i know that the output material is clean cuz i'm monitoring it thru my monitors while it's being recorded. tried pading and it dosent work either. i guess it's only safe to assume that the inputs of the mbox cant manage the processed signal of the ultramizer. with that being the case however is there an interface that can take such signal levels? i really want to resot to a burner as my last solution

The LINE inputs of the Mbox 2 can take +21dBu which is pretty high and higher than the maximum output of the Ultramiser which is only +16dBu (According to Behringer's specs).

You are using the TRS jack sockets to connect the Ultraniser into the Mbox aren't you? The XLR mic input sockets won't cope at all.

hugh

He seems to be using the Mini2, I could not find specs for that and I think it has only 1 mic input.

This should theoretically work, you need to be 100pct sure
of what is coming out of the Ultramizer is clean first(monitor via the outputs that are going to the A/D of the M Box,
even if you have to remove them from the mbox, you must 100pct be sure that this specififc signal is clean)

If it is it is definitely your signal level into the Mbox nnalogue stage or your are clipping the digital on the way in.

If not, I am stumped, good luck.
