13" or 15" Macbook Pro? new
      #783959 - 02/11/09 01:30 PM

So this week I'll be buying a Macbook Pro, however when I buy it entirely depends on which model I get. Regardless of which I get, it will be the base 2.53GHz spec. With my student discount, the 13" is £987 and the 15" is £1116.

While I was wanting the 15" (purely for the extra resolution), it does cost that little bit extra and, if I get the 15", I'll need to take some money out from my paycheck on Friday to put towards it (I'm £75 off - I get £350 a month).

Basically, I'm just a bit worried that the lower resolution (1200x800) of the 13" would give me problems (I'm currently using a 17" PC at 1400x900 that I'm used to). I do have a 720p TV I will (eventually) connect up to the laptop, but when I'm out and about at college or doing field recording I don't want to end up wishing I went for the slightly bigger model.

So, would it be worth it to hold out a week and put a bit more money into a 15" or will a 13" suffice?

If you've got a second monitor that you'll be connecting to it for mixdown and suchlike, I'd be tempted to plump for the 13" and save yourself 100-odd quid; personally I kinda 'get away with it' even on a 15" screen for location recording and then run the separate arrange and mixer windows on two monitors at home for mixdown, works fine.

For portability I use a 13", then hook it up to a large monitor when at my desk. Best of both worlds, and you can buy the monitor next month !

For portability, I use a Dell Mini 9". Otherwise I use an MBP 15"...

Yep. I do exactly the same - recording onto my 13" macbook if I'm 'on location', and then plugging it into a monitor when I get home.

The 17" is ever so slightly out of my budget I don't think I'd ever buy another 17" laptop anyway; as much as I love my Windows one, it is a bit of a pain to carry around every day.

But, after some heavy contemplation, I've gone for the 15". It never shipped yesterday though so I'll have to wait until Monday before it even leaves the factory =(

Looks like I'll be light on the pints this month!

Cheers, guys.
