Soundcard recommendations sought

Hi folks,
It's new soundcard time here, I'd appreciate any recommendations for
the following requirements:
Basically, what I need is 8 in, 2 out, 24/96
support, +S/PDIF IO. After just making a whole load of new balanced cables I want all the
analogue ins and outs to be balanced connectors. ASIO2 a must - I'm a dedicated Cubase
user. PCI card is OK, although firewire preferred.
I am starting to find the
huge variety of options quite difficult to properly consider, so any opinions and
recommendations much appreciated.

Hi Avon Dodgy business recommending anything specific here but, if it's any
help, just finished an exhaustive search and made a decision on an E-Mu. Worth a look at.
There 1820m may suit your needs. web page good luck

I just bought it.
Looks very good so far, but the patchmix software is tricky
to get around, especially seeing as that there is no manual.
Zukan has
reviewed this card in full here
IMO one of the best cost : performance cards you can
get for the money

Ah, but there is an 1820M manual, although you may not have found it yet Unfortunately, due to a bug, the filename of the PDF manual on the CD-ROM got truncated,
so it gets ignored by the install process. As I mentioned in my 1820M review, you need to
copy it across by hand and rename it as 'Emulator X.PDF'. Then you can access
it with the help function of the PatchMix software, and it contains copious details on
every function. Martin

My 'Getting Started' and 'PatchMixDSPManual' PDF manuals are both in the C:\Program
Files\Creative Professional\E-MU Patchmix DSP folder, while the Emulator X.pdf manual is
in C:\Program Files\Creative Professional\Emulator X folder. There are 110
pages in the PatchMix DSP manual, and 192 in the Emulator X one! Martin

I have just got a MOTU 828mkII firewire. Cracking card - OK not quite a card but a 19"
rack.... From analogue inputs I get a noise floor in SONAR of -104dbFS avg RMS on
recording!!! Very solid drivers. ASIO, Gigathingy..and MME/WDM. Cost
is 570 from www.imuso.co.uk - a
little more than you want but it is an incredible unit. 8 in 8 out with 2x fx send, phones
and main outs - with routing from almost anything to almost anything - I was dead chuffed
having upgraded from an M-Audio Delta44 where I had a noise floor of -93dBFS im
very very pleased. The AD/DA sounds pristine... Cant recommend it enough
