Mandrake Bootable CD new
      #80717 - 29/01/05 03:17 PM
Hi there!

I just bought a magazine witha a bootable CD with mandrake 10.1. does this work like knoppix? I mean I do not need to install anything, do I?

can anyone please help me with handling this thing? the installation seems pretty strainghtforward, but I ended it when it came to the poitn where it asked me to define a partition. what would it actually save on that partition? since my laptop HD is not yet partitioned, and I have not had time to partition my new HD, is ended the application. I was wondering whether I could do something similar to knoppix, make a partition on a usb key.

the magazine is "Linux Magazine" and it comes with the mandrake 10.1 live CD. I could not find out reading the magazine if I could use the usb key. can anyone please help?

if not, can anyone please give me a link to download knoppix? there are a few dozens linked to the site, and when I followed the UK one, it had a bunch of files to download. do I download each one separately?

sorry for the dumb questions...

many thanks

1: http://www.knoppix.org/ choose the english page (or another one you understand better than german).

2: at the bottom, follow "download"

3: choose one of the mirrors and accept the download agreement

4: download the latest .iso file. The -DE stands for german version, -EN for the english. The .md5 file contains a checksum that you can use to verify if the download is correct.

5: burn this .iso to a cd-rom as an image, and boot your pc with it.

There are a *lot* of new live cd distributions. You can probably find something better suited:

http://distrowatch.com/
http://www.ibiblio.org/

Has anyone in here tried the new Novell Suse distribution? {I downloaded it but realized the trial runs out in 3o days and I needed a permanent system at the time.} Xandros? The Haansoft 64 bit server? Turbolinux?

Anyone else tried this? http://jdx.sourceforge.net/ {Seems a trifle raw but it's got extreme potential.}

I want to set up a java centric system on this machine {Need to find an empty 40 gig} and I'd like to do something ultra-modern with as little legacy stuff as possible. Does anyone know if you can do java on HURD? {Apparently it will run apache}
