External DAW controller - any advice ?
      #815153 - 27/02/10 08:13 AM
Hi, I'm sick and tired of reaching across to my keyboard (it's not best placed but can't really be moved) all the time I want to start, stop, rewind etc. I would like to get a hardware controller to stick next to my synths to do this, I have seen the Frontier Tranzport which looks the right sort of thing but seems expensive for what you get (like everyone else I am on a budget here !) Can anyone recommend a simple cheap DAW remote transport ?

Thanks a lot

I really like my Frontier AlphaTrack. Not at the same price level as the above, but this thing is beautifully made, with motorised touch-sensitive fader, touch sensitive knobs, ribbon shuttle control, transport controls and covers a lot of functions in a small device. I think it gives a lot for the money.

I'm going to recommend the Presonus Faderport. Sure, it's a perhaps a little pricier than what you're after, but it's solidly built and integrates seamlessly into your workflow. Honestly I work so much faster with it, I love the thing to death.

I've owned the Nano Kontrol too, but I didn't really like it. It's really very cheaply built, and having to reset faders all the time was a pain.

Great ! Thanks for the advice, it's always good to get advice from someone that uses it. I may just have to save my pennies for longer !

I was playing around with a gamepad last week and, with suitable (free) software, was able to control my DAW very effectively, so there's a £10-15 option.

FWIW, you might want to check out the Novation offerings. I use an SL Zero MkII and am very happy with it - touch controls, plenty of visual feedback, very ergonomic, very flexible - also has pre-built templates for most DAWs and a very nifty piece of server software called Automap:-

Surprisingly, the actual unit looks way better than the advert photo, too.

MIDI controllers have come a long way in the last few years - used to be just Kenton, Peavey or nuttin' - with inscrutable 3 character LEDs, if you were lucky! ;-)

+1 for the Faderport. It's been spot on and reliable and is perfect for fader-riding and fast transport control.

...or you could just assign, say, the lowest 5 notes on your midi keyboard to trigger this in your DAW.

Remote without *any* cost :-)

Just a mention on the Frontier Tranzport - it may seem expensive, but I find mine absolutely invaluable when I'm recording on my own in a session (i.e. I'm in the booth and am separated from the control & all the desk/PC keyboard etc.).

I've had mine for several years, and it's been tough and reliable throughout. Definitely worth a look if you're likely to be recording anything away from your DAW.
