Steven Slate Drums EX - where are the wav/gog files? new
      #815955 - 02/03/10 11:12 AM
I couldn’t resist the ‘No Brainer’ deal for the Steven Slate Drums EX.

I have a question, but the vendors aren’t responding. Can anyone here help?

I’ve installed the package, apart from Kontakt Player, since I have Kontakt 3 installed already. Everything seems to work fine; I can see the SSD library and I can load and use the kits.

But I wonder if I’ve misunderstood something about the contents of the package. I can’t get at the underlying WAV files (the data seems to be hidden in a couple of huge Kontakt library files) and there are no GOG files at all (for use with Drumagog). I’m restricted to using the sounds in Kontakt, hence triggering from Drumagog’s MIDI output, which gives me less than stellar timing. This is a bit restrictive for my needs.

Have I found the reason why this package was only 20 dollars?

Yup, sorry to say, there was some stuff about this all over the SSD forums, gearslutz and others. I think it said it on the "no brainer" deal page aswell.

OK, thanks for that. I’ve no complaints for the price. They sound very good indeed.

I thought I'd read the description carefully, but it was obviously what *wasn't* there that was the important part to read!

Elf I'd be very interested to hear your opinion on the Slate samples. I own the premium pack and while the samples sound really nice when you listen to them on their own, I find that within a mix they tend to sound very slappy and small.
I tend to mix Interpol/Pearl Jam type material so it's not as if my mix is overwhelmed with complicated parts or layers, but I'm finding that trying to get the samples to maintain their punch and 'largeness' is quite difficult. At times it's also quite difficult to marry the samples to live overheads when using the gog replacements.

Just my experiences, I'd be interested to hear what you think,

Cheers.

Try compressing the original tracks with the samples, process them together, also it might not be a steven slate sample thing if your using drumagog, drumagog can have issues with phase and your original files.

If the new sample is out of phase with the original part they will cancel, perhaps resulting in the thin sound you are suggesting.

Try manually putting the samples in and see if that helps things.

Hi James, cheers for the reply.

When I'm using the Slate samples I forgot to mention that I don't blend them with the original, I fully replace them. That would ensure that phase wouldn't be an issue I guess?

I'll try manually adding in .wav files of the samples and I'll also try mixing them in with the origial, just to see if that improves things

Depending on how you mic your kit up, remember your overheads will get bleed of the whole kit, including the kick snare and toms, so you could have them out of phase with your whole kit sound!

Perhaps try a different tack with drum mic'ing using your overheads as your overall kit sound, then augmenting that with close mics/and or samples.

I have already run off a quick'n'rough re-mix using one of the supplied kits. They sound HUGE, which is fine by me! I will probably have to do more work taking out a bit of the 'size' than finding more, which is much more of a struggle.

Yep, I love them. I will know more when the next rock band arrive to record, which is only a few weeks away.

Awesome, there's some useful stuff on "softening" up the snares, over on the SSD forums, spl's transient designer can be great for this kind of stuff,

Theres a free one called Flux Bittersweet.

Gothcha - thank, James.

But to be honest, I like these sounds as they are. If time and money were no object, these are how my drums would always sound!

Haha agreed, sometimes for subtler parts though i find they can need taming.

Elf,
I'm just wondering are you using the gog/wav files for replacement perhaps with drumagog, or are you somehow triggering the preset kits within Kontakt by some other means?

Both.

My own material relies on drum patterns I create myself, usually triggering Battery from a MIDI keyboard. Kontakt is OK, but it’s overkill for a few drum samples, and it’s a bit daunting to make a few simple tweaks – especially since the drums are split across many Instruments in a Multi. I find Battery much simpler in that respect, and it’s far easier to try out new samples in there by clicking and replacing cells on the fly.

Drumagog can generate MIDI output, but from past experience I know that it functions better with its own internal gog files.

When I’m working with a band I sometimes have to use sample replacement. In the case of metal bands the drummer often cannot achieve the level of consistency that the band are hoping for. Drumagog can usually sort out the snare, but to get that pin-sharp ‘dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga’ double-kick pattern I’ll often end up just cutting and pasting wav files along a new kick drum track.

So, having the choice of Kontakt, wav and gog is going to be great!
