2nd hand UAD plugins

What a shame UA's licencing system doesn't allow transfer of UAD plugins. I have quite a
few that I bought, that I don't find I use much. I'd love to swap them for others, with
people wishing to trade, or sell them.
Most companies do plugin-relicensing. In
fact, all my other plugins can be transferred. Why don't UA do it?
(except of
course that it isn't in their interests to do so...)

UA - "We have no desire to be in the second-hand plugin business." Don't
forget, every time the user wants to transfer a plugin, UA support have to get involved to
do the transfer - it in effect costs UA every time someone wants to sell their plugins,
with no real tangible business benefit. I don't think I've ever wanted to sell
any plugins I've bought - perhaps people should evaluate their initial purchases decisions
a bit harder before buying stuff?

Well you could sell your UAD card with all its plug-in authorisations attached, buy a new
card, and then only buy the plug-ins you actually want.
Depending on how many
you don't need, this may or may not be financially viable!

Probably not! I don't use the 88RS much, and
a couple of others. I'd like to part-ex them for some SSL plugins, or the Fatso or
Distressor (when arrives). I can't afford those plugins right now. In the past I have
regularly traded gear I don't use for gear I want (including UAD plugins!). It's a shame
that the unused UAD plugins are sunk money, effectively worth nothing. I don't have any
other gear with a zero resale value.
I think it's a shame. UA get so much good
press for appearing to be nice to their customers. In time, perhaps this feature of their
sales maxmization strategy will become their "WUP" ... who knows!

Completely
agree. Sometimes a plug can also become 'obsolete' because another bundle or whatever
covers the same ground but suits me better etc.
I too am a bit surprised that
UAD - much loved by so many for being sooo good to their customers (whereas they mostly
have a clever PR ;-), are hardly critised for this.
But for instance, the
often criticised TC electronics with their powercore shift licenses without any
problem/cost (in most cases).
(don't tell me there is not a way to automate
that process especially with these hw-dongles that are all registered in the same db..).

I'd have to agree it would be useful to be able to sell redundant plugs on the second hand
market. I also think that it would be reasonable for UAD to charge for
registration/ownership transfer. I think this would be preferable to having to pay a
ongoing fee (like the Waves WUP) simply to keep your plugs current. The transfer fee could
then be costed into the resale price, so you'd know where you stand. Having
said that, I think the UAD method of being able to audition fully working versions of all
plug-ins before buying means that the chances of buying a plug-in that you don't really
need is reduced. I know myself I have 'favorite' plug-ins and they can move in
and out of favor. So just because I'm not using, say, the Precision EQ, much at present,
well there may be a job just around the corner for which it will be ideal. Bob

You can unregister plugins from one card and register them to another? Does this cost? If
you had several machines, could you transfer plugins between the cards in them?
Either buy a nother card, transfer and sell the card, or do as suggested above.
I take it they don't care who it's registered to? -just as long as it's
registered to a card?

No, all your plugins work across all your cards (up to 4) in the
same group. If you want your plugins to work on a second group of 4 cards, you have
to buy them again.

You'll have to sell them with the card then.

well I suppose, plugins don't weather or degenerate like hardware, so if a second hand
market developed that valued a particular plugin at less than the retail price, UAD would
never sell one of those again. So the market would be skewed in that respect. However that could also be said for other plugins (IK, Waves, PSP etc) too. Still doesnt seem fair to the cash-strapped punter.
