Has SoS thought about having a regular column on Cockos Reaper? I think it would be worth
it. Paul

I've used Cubase for yearsm and really just stumbled across Reaper. All I can say is WOW!
This program is so powerful, deep, and configurable. I've noticed in SOS that a number
of tunes sent in for mixing were tracked in Reaper. I, for one, will renew my
subscription if a Reaper column is added.
C'mon Paul, just do it.

i believe it already exists, albeit in fledgling form, but is rotated over a few months
with digital performer and reason or something along those lines...
eg,
there's only space for one each month, and they alternate which one it is...

Sorry, this isn't correct. Currently,
there's no dedicated Reaper column, and there didn't appear to be a huge appetite for it
in our recent reader survey. However, we do cover tips and tricks in Reaper quite
regularly in the Mix Rescue articles, and we will of course continue to review the
situation.

Quite a lot happens in Reaper in the course of a month. It's probably a good idea to go in
to a little detail about the developments in the Reaper world, such as new additions and
authors to the SWS extension project, or the great new trick NAS came up with to doing
automation items, sort of .
Let's face it, nothing like this happens in other DAWs or their communities. I'd
love to be wrong about this obviously. Just look at Protools where the poor users have to
scream for fixes.
So, Reaper has a couple of great MIDI editor features just
out. Padre joined the SWS extension project with his LFO-for-envelopes/audio/midi generating actions, Tim himself(sws) has
written much wanted smart cut/copy/remove/split actions after a user resubmitted a request
for them a day earlier, Jeffos added actions to cut/copy/paste fx chains in and out of slots for tracks and items,
and NAS found a nice way to use parameter modulation to enable clever control of parameters via the volume
fader of other tracks.
That's less than two weeks of news, and I haven't
even mentioned details of the last huge changelog of v3.4 yet. AATranslator is about to
pop out OMF and Protools 5 export of Reaper sessions too. Enough for a news column and the
occasional Tips and Tricks column ? We think so.

If this was added I would subscribe. Reaper is adding features on a daily basis so there
would be no shortage of material to write about.

Might it also help to have a dedicated section on the forum... given that it's updated
fast enough to be one step ahead of any print magazine workshops?

I don't think that the SOS forum needs splitting up into such
fine detail. If you want detailed help on Reaper then their own dedicated forum is
available and tends to be one of the friendlier forums on the net.
There are
also plenty of us Reaper users around on the SOS forums to help with any basic queries.
Cheers
James.

I was just about to put a request in for "Reaper Notes", when I realised there must be
more of us using it, and it would have been asked before.
I used Cubase from
the very first Atari ST version, and abandoned it at v.4. Since then I've been very happy
with Reaper.
So would the mag reconsider a "Reaper Notes" feature ?

It is being re-appraised. As we found with the furore that erupted from unhappy DP
users of the site, when we removed Digital Performer Notes from its monthly status, there
are always way way more online readers who never buy the magazine but read the DP articles
online for free when they get unlocked after 5 months.
The same people rarely
ever complete Reader Surveys, which is a real pity -- if they did then we'd get
better insight into what SOS mag is NOT doing that they would like us to cover. (We can
guess what a wider audience wants, and we use popularity of threads and gear sold in
readers ads etc to give us unattributed guide data, to assess viability or not of our
ongoing ideas.)
This Mag Feedback forum is very useful lifeline to such
non-print/non-eSub/non-Digital Edition readers, and we do read every post, and discuss at
planning and strategy meetings.

That's one of the major issues
we have with any DAW column that is designed to work for Print readership (and gets
converted in eSub and Digital Editions after).
Quote:

Precisely. It's so
fast-moving, with feature changes quicker than most commercial DAWs (well that's how it
feels to me when I've looked at it).

A Cockos Reaper Notes column might well attract more paying
subscribers and newsstand buyers. Sorry to raise the commercial head of the beast, but
independent mags like us have to assess where extra revenue may come from when we add
pages to the magazine, or elect to leave something out.
We've just added 16
editorial pages (May issue onwards) every month for a Video section for musicians to be
incorporated. This is a gamble we think will pay off. Why? Because SOS needs to expand
into related areas, and Reader Survey and posts in our Music Business and Web Music forums
show there are non-subscribers who we might attract, and frankly there isn't a decent
print mag covering this in the UK consumer market anymore. Some great online websites, but
nothing to read in print/eSub formats.
The fastest way SOS would introduce a
regular Reaper Notes feature would be if enterprising writers who use it, step forward and
contact us -- or send us an example of a proposed column they'd like to get published.
Nothing is written in stone at SOS -- we adapt to address the audience's needs, always
have done, that's why we've survived for 25 years. Mike Senior uses Reaper frequently (in
his MIX RESCUE articles) but Mike's busy doing our major workshop
articles and their audio files, so we'd hate to lose him from doing this by tying him up
with a monthly Reaper Notes committment (it's keeping up with all the CR news that's the
time-eater)... so we'd need new/other writers to step forward.

Just subscribed, didn't know until today that this was in existence. I'd like to point out
that if you leave it too long to introduce a REAPER note section, it will make the
magazine look somewhat behind the times I'm
surprised you're still debating it Ian -I thought it would be a question of when, who was
writing it and how do we fit it in an xx-page issue... I'm looking forward to
it when it arrives >

I've been a regular reader of SOS for years and am now a regular subscriber. Over the
past few years SOS has not only decreased in physical size, but in the number of pages as
well. I've seen it occur in nearly every audio-related print mag. My hope is that SOS
will not go the way of these other magazines and eventually fade out. Frankly, I beleive
SOS is the best on the market and adding a Reaper notes column would only enhance that
standing. The survey and sign-up for Reaper notes process is not a scientific way to
determine interest. More anectodotal really. Wht not try a Reaper Notes section for 6
months or so and see if it has any effect on circulation? If page count is a big concern,
why not reduce the size of a few other sections and make room for Reaper notes? That way
noting is deleted and something is added. I'm fairly new to Reaper, but I've already
learned this is a deep and powerful program. I think you'll be pleasantly surpried at the
positive repsonse you'll receive after adding Reaper Notes.

has the most Reaper content.

One small point of order. On the subject of format I suppose. The Cubase and Reason
articles in SOS have been in depth studies into a fixed programme which can then be used
as a map for further exploration, referring back to the article when things get a bit
involved. After the review of Reaper 3 I revisited Reaper, played with it for a couple of
days, bought it and enquired about a Reaper notes section. The answer at the time was that
given the rapid rate of updates any traditional "notes" atricle would be out of date by
the time it was printed.
This reply made sense at the time and since then has
become more valid as Reaper seems to gather momentum (I'm sure in no small part to Mike
Senior's enthusiastic and intelligent vote of confidence and subsequent inspiring Mix
Rescue articles).
The Cockos forum seems to do the "keeping up to date" bit
pretty well and any "notes" section would have to do something that the forum doesn't.
Perhaps a filtered summing up or intelligent intepretation of posts would be useful,
particularly to those of a delicate disposition like myself for whom the language in the
Cockos forum might be a bit fruity (I'm a lady, you know).

I know that the Magazine Feedback forum is the right place for this... but I know many
people don't lurk here that often. Might it be worth drawing attention to this in the main
MRT, Mac and PC threads? You may get more responses that way... and if not, then you can't
really be in any doubt about the lack of interest!

Yes, yes, yes! We need a Cockos Reaper section in SOS. I have Reaper
3 and sometimes move over from Nuendo 4 to mix some of my work and for me it's fantastic
in the sense that a empty mansion is better to work with than a fully furnished house.
This makes Reaper open for a full tinkering but also means that it can be a little unusal
to grasp for those that are used to the other DAW software which are tailored to be used
in a certain way. So please take note SOS and start featuring hints and tips on
this brilliant 'open-ended' DAW software.

I'm a logic user, but i have had a play around with the demo version and i have to say, i
thought it was amazing!
And i'd love to see a reaper notes section in SOS.
Its a good choice of software for people starting out on a budget, and they're
obviously the kind of people who would benefit most from a notes section.
Plus
as others have mentioned, they are always bringing out updates so they'd be loads of stuff
to write about.
and lastly i'd like to add that a notes section is kind of a
nod of respect to the software itself, the developers and users about the capabilities and
the professional results that can be had from using Reaper.
Come on SOS, you
know you want to!

I agree. There should be a Reaper notes in SOS. I've been a long time user of SONAR and
came across Reaper as a result of its feature in SOS. I cant believe this DAW offers so
much for such a modest price. It's my "go to" for all my projects now. Also appears to have
developed a strong following so really deserves a "notes" of it's own in SOS!!!
