Short survey about Rhythm & Groove: WE NEED YOUR EARS!
      #827220 - 15/04/10 11:43 PM
I'm currently writing a paper about programmed rhythms and whether they realistic threaten the future of the drummer for studio recordings. One major part of this topic is the issue of groove. What exactly is it? And can a computer emulate it effectively?

As part of this, I have put together a short survey containing some rhythmic loops.

It would be a great help if you could take 5 minutes to do the survey.

Thank you for your time

I got as far as the fourth page when it just hung and would't come back. I gave up too.

Also - you seem intent on pushing 'groove' as the be-all and end-all of drums. I couldn't care less about 'groove' and I have no idea whether a one bar loop has it or not, so my answers would be pretty useless to you anyway. There's more to drums tracks than 'groove' and more to music than dance-a-bility.

Started trying it, just to see what the fuss was about, but the loops didn't load properly and so loop A played for one beat only, and Loop B never got past beat 3.

Whatever software you are using is very flawed. Gave up. Can't be arsed.

Definitely not. I have reservations about the moonlight and I know you don't have good times at Zuke Towers.

Now this make the term 'groove' as clear as mud..

Jeff Pressing's 2002 article claimed that a "groove or feel" is "a cognitive temporal phenomen emerging from one or more carefully aligned concurrent rhythmic patterns, characterized by...perception of recurring pulses, and subdivision of structure in such pulses,...perception of a cycle of time, of length 2 or more pulses, enabling identification of cycle locations, and...effectiveness of engaging synchronizing body responses (e.g. dance, foot-tapping)".
