Fatal Virus

Well it was fatal for my laptop computer. My wife borrowed my laptop, and
called me a half hour later to "fix" the computer. It was popping up all kinds of screens
telling me my credit card details were being hacked right now, and demanding $10 to get
the 'fix' It had disabled Windows 7 security, Microsoft Security Essentials,
and my firewall settings. I could do nothing. When I re-booted it was in my
face again immediately, rendering the computer unusable. In a fit of temper I
put my fist straight through the screen, smashing it clean off its mounts and sending it
clear across the room. That felt so good that I took the body of the laptop and
smashed it to smithereens on the flagstones on the patio. "It's fixed" I
informed my wife, who was in fit's of laughter, then I dusted off my Apple Mac and told
her I'd give her a hundred quid and a new computer if she could get the same problem to
appear on the Mac. She can't do it. What do you have to do? latest OS, latest
Microsoft Security Essentials, and still stuffed!! Bollox to PC's from now on
- I've had enough.

I had the same problem with my office PC a few weeks ago (also my other half at the
helm...). It took me ten minutes to recover the system drive from the image copy taken a
few days before...
Of course, physically destroying it would have been slightly quicker still!

it seems the child in you has turned
out to be expensive rather than priceless on this occasion though

For reference:
Turn on machine > Press F8 during boot up and enter
safemode with networking > Open up Browser and goto trend Micro > Run housecall
online > Reboot > Use as normal.
You got a trojan judging by the what
happened which has to be downloaded by the user via an e-mail attachement or some other
file, and thus makes the firewall useless and renders the OS part of the arguement moot as
well.
MS security essentials also comes under the heading of useless as far
as prevention goes no matter what tripe their marketing team trots out.

I once lived in a developing country in Latin America. I lived on quite a remote farm, and
further up the trail was another even more remote farm. Every Sunday, after a session on
the rum, Pedro passed through our farm on the way back to his. He was woozily balanced
atop his donkey, his wife, carrying a sack of rice on her head, suckling a couple of
babies, another baby slung on her back, two bags of shopping and a trail of kids hanging
onto her being pulled along hollering, midering and blubbing.
I asked Pedro,
how come your missus isn't riding on a donkey?
Pedro replied "She hasn't got
one"
The moral of the story is....Get a new wife that has her own laptop,
what kind of sites has she been visiting!!!!! LOL

Thank you. I've made a note of that. I don't normally use a PC for the
net, my wife does, and has endless trouble, that I normally can sort out, or can swap in a
cloned drive. This was quite an old laptop though (and not expensive!), which
did not have easy access to the drive, so I didn't clone it. She has totalled a
laptop and a desktop previously, and is now on her second desktop (cloned drive in the
drawer below) She only surfs facebook, myspace, gmail, and the like, but she
regularly gets whatever flavour of virus is currently infecting the PC world. I see on another thread that this latest vicious barsteward got onto the tcelectronics
website! I much prefer my PC's for loads of reasons, but for the net? no
thanks.

Get her a Linux based Lap/net book they quite capable for facebook email social networking
et al. Plus you dont get the glazed eye, dazed, out of pocket experience that is
Apple mac. Nor the bullying, clunky, virus riddled nonsense that is Microsoft.

Too true. The's already some kicking about for the Mac (including some very nasty Trojans)
but you unless your foolish enough to be using extremly dodgy warez sites it appears the
people trying to infect macs are still having trouble getting suitable delivery systems in
place.

Alternatively, the PC isn't properly setup and your wife has
clearly been on a website that she shouldn't have been, probably peer-to-peer.

Never ever go

NOD32 is very good, it is only available for
a months free trial. I used it once to shift a virus that AVG let through and wouldn't
delete, and then once I cleaned the machine, continued to use it for the remainder of the
30 days and then uninstalled, and the uninstall is quick and complete unlike
Norton/Symantec and MacAfee etc. I then installed Avast, used to like AVG till it got
bloated and let me down - not as if I could ask for my money back though LOL
On that thought - if I bought some antivirus software, kept the av database up to date
and did all other updates etc and a virus got onto my computer - could I ask for a refund?
because the software wouldn't be fit for purpose. Thats why I use freeware as much as I
can these days, most the bought software doesn't do as promised anyway

To OP
Did you have an A/V active?
I have a PC laptop in the lounge
that my wife uses, eight year old and five year old (they're good kids they never damage
the laptop;-)
All three of them are hopeless PC users though, they open every
thing going and download games and all sorts of cr*p!!
I stuck PC Tools Spy
Dpctor Anti-Virus on the laptop and have never had a single infection.
I am
even happy to do my banking on line on that machine.
I highly recommend SDAV it
really does do it's job.

My wife is incredibly naive, hardly surprising since she comes from a tiny island
called Fanning in the equatorial pacific. We've been married 3 years and living here in
England for 18 months. She really has taken big time to the comms possibilities of
computers, and keeps in touch with her countrymen on a page called Kiribati Online
Community. The thing is, while I lived in Kiribati (pronounced Kiri-bas) there
was a sporadic internet connection available to locals who could afford the 4 dollars an
hour government fee. BUT everyone had every virus going, and those fortunate few who had
laptops and or pen drives would rapidly infect the whole island in a few days. I think my wife gets these viruses from that source still. But to be honest I'm no great
shakes either at knowing how to avoid them, and this thread has shown me stuff I really
didn't know, for which I'm grateful. My comments about the mac reflect this, in that (for
now at least) it's harder to get a virus on the mac. As I say though, for tons of reasons
I prefer my PC's for music and recording. I did manage to record lots of locals
while I was there though, and those people love to sing. It was an unusual experience
though. No-one had heard of the Beatles for example. I showed a whole bunch of
people how to use a vocoder (on my Nuendo 2) to emulate the Cher played vocal that was
just out at the time and fascinated the locals no end. I digress, but I have
noted all the suggestions, as my wife still has her desktop PC which I'd like to keep
virus free.

Soooo...to sum up. Guy gets angry with inanimate object, decides to break it, is then
informed it was fixable. Possibly feels a little silly and then begins an embarassing (for
both parties) forum name calling episode. I thought I'd accidently logged into the cubase
forums it was that bad. To the mods, is it possible to delete a thread, but keep petes
info somewhere, that I found useful.

Wait a minute William, this is what I got from feline:
lol this is like
on doctor's forums when someone posts "a close friend of mine has gone this embarrassing
problem", innit?
It came from not believing a single word you typed,
mainly. But also from cynicism, worldly experience, and a dry sense of humour. Be seeing you.
Humouring your ass is not the issue, mister. Quite
frankly, unless you can produce a marriage certificate, I shall continue to doubt
whether you even had a computer in the first place, never mind a wife. And
what? - you think I'm at fault? you think I wont respond to that?
So I broke
my laptop - big deal! the point I'm making is that people will get these viruses and some
of them (like ME) will not be technical enough to deal with them, and if they don't
physically break them in temper, will just have to close them down and put them away until
someone who knows how will fix them.
Guess what?
This thread showed
me how. It's just a pity I had to put up with the anal comments listed above in the
process.
If you wanna be judge and jury - at least get your facts straight.

My wife finally tired of slow, crashing Windows (XP) and all the assorted problems. She
had me install Ubuntu Netbook Edition on her laptops, and has been fine ever since.
Another option is (free) Sun VirtualBox running Ubuntu Linux - Linux on Windows
for netsurfing mainly. Managing photos, printing etc. is on Windows.
Works fine
:-)
