Not a good listening experience. Production is messy - clashing
notes, everything competing to be heard, bad choice of sounds etc.
The bell
was quite nice for the first 5 secs then that awful kick drum and the horrible synth
sounds came in. You should at least tune the kick up a tone. That would certainly
help.

Why make a moronic comment like that? "i see you don't like black music".
Love black music, hate crap music. But hey, you like it dude and that's all that
matters.
Why bother asking for criticism if you don't actually want it? Maybe
get your mum to review it then eh? Much safer.

Hey, I can't help if its raw and unadultrated. With a name like Sea Lion I doubt we have
much in common.

I found it unpleasant to listen to, I'm afraid. There's some

jazz that I like that some people I know can't stand.

It's true, I don't listen to any black music. Except for blues

it.

If you can get someone to pay grand for this then you deserve a medal (or they deserve a
slap round the head) - arrangement and idea are fine in a generic way, but the sounds and
mix are very poor. Can you imagine your 'raw and undultrated' sound competing with
commercial releases in a club at 3am, grabbing folks attention, getting them on their feet
to dance? You're going to have to use something other than a Casio home organ to be taken
seriously.
Ken is right about the arp at the end - tidy.
Worth
bearing in mind that coming on a forum as a newbie with 8 posts and making sweeping
assumptions about posters you know nothing about gives the impression that you're a know
nothing know all. But then you already knew that of course.

cmon guys your being very harsh cut the guy some slack and dont critisice unless you can
walk the talk you're self - i listened to it with alan last night and we really liked it
and would certainly welciome the opportunity to do a collab - the beat has a def funkyness
to it kind of reminded us of mr scruff kind of vibe but maybe could of done with some
distoriton guitar and more high hat
to the op - dont let these few jelous
forum members bring you down dude - i remember when we came on here we just got loads of
abuse - it almost made us give up but like the famous saying goes 'even sir edward hilary
started at the bottom of evrest' - and its true if you think about it
then
when 'only u' got in the top 10 on souncilck (in the whole of the acosutic section) they
were laughing on the other side of they're faeces then
its like one of the
things about this forum you have to earn respect i think because they're are alot of top
pros on here and i mean alot - speaking for ourselfs we only earnt that respect once we
did the christmas single and gave some of the proceds to charity (aa - because they got
the metro going in impossible cirmustanses)
good luck and dont give up - oh
and i too loved the arp at the end

I'm afraid I have to agree with the comments above. Nasty
clashing sounds, very repetitive and boring, poor sound choices. Very basic overall.
Not bad if it is your first attempt at a song.

It's a shame the OP had to respond in this manner to Sea
Lion's critical appraisal. There's a simple way to look at this, in my humble opinion: If
you're going to put your music in the public domain and then court people's views and
opinions, it's absolutely necessary to accept that others may not like your creation. I've
put my music on to websites and it's been called everything from crap to great. If I were
to respond defensively to those who have made negative remarks, then I would lose both
credibility and worse, my dignity.
To slyly infer some kind of racism on Sea
Lion's part is really out of order.
Moving on to your track:
There are parts in it which are really original, and unusual. The chords are dissonant,
but edgy, and like other posters, I like the bell riff. However, it is very badly
produced. All the elements are fighting for attention, and it ends up sounding very
in-cohesive and grating. It's also extremely repetitive and a bit boring. If you analyze a
lot of hip hop, on the surface it sounds simple but there is a lot of "ear candy".
Unfortunately, points of interest and variety are totally absent on this track. It just
sounds like a load of loops carelessly thrown on top of each other, with no consideration
given to how each element interacts.
I wouldn't have put a track into the
public domain in such an unfinished state. Finally, the $1000 price tag you have put on
this track is refreshingly naiive, and I admire your self-confidence.

Maybe we're all getting the wrong end of the stick. He says (quote): "I have been making
music for 12 years and have sold over 100 tracks, 1000 a pop".
I think he means
1000 pence.

Colin - one of your very finest spelling
juxtapositions, but maybe in this case the additional 'e' was entirely deliberate ?
Excellent, keep it up.
Back OT - for me too, the OP's tune is nothing I
particularly get off on, but you can't expect everyone to like everything. But it's also
true that one of the best things to develop in this industry is a delicate balance between
having a very thick skin, able to deflect the worst of idiot (sometimes) criticism, and
also the understanding to realize that sometimes those critics do have a point- and
therefore allow you the ability to get some level of objectivity about both your music and
your production of it, and therefore some possibility of improving it.
Years
(and years) ago, when I was touting my attempts round labels, one A&R guy did me the
great favour of telling me just exactly where and how my music was "... basically ... it's
incompetent [ ****** ], man. The production is all over the place, way too much bass, and
the ideas and sounds are ... pedestrian. I can't sell this to anyone. Come back in 5
years, though ..."
As it happens, 5 years later the label was deceased ... (too
much success, too early, followed by too much cocaine. Cue downward spiral into bankruptcy
... but that's another story) - but having been sent off with a clap round the ear I went
back, furious, and jacked up my expectations of my own music and didn't emerge until I had
something that genuinely matched them (and got a deal with it ...)
Simply
writing off other people's genuine and considered responses to your music as something to
be completely ignored - just because you don't like those responses - is to learn
absolutely bugger all, about music in general, your music, and yourself.
It's
certainly not going to help you make better music.

OMG is this guy serious?? I checked his other posts, he has a really big head... for
nothing...... I've heard thousands of better tracks!!!
Plus if he can't
handle criticism, I dont know how he manage to live from that... You asked for criticism
you got it! Everyone is different so don't expect everyone to like your music...(specially
this track, do you seriously think music publisher would be interested... lol). And I'm
not talking about the mixing and mastering, I do have songs that are not mixed or
mastered, that's not the most important when you post your music here. I'm talking about
the melody, the sounds you used (the telephone part reminded me of an episode of "Friends"
when Ross doing "music" with his old keyboard)...

Very general MIDI generic sounding, i.e. amateurish. Did you actually play this or
assemble from samples??
The drum groove is unimaginative and lacking in feel
and the drum sound is weak.
The overall arrangement is far too busy, too many
elements competing for the same space. Start with a decent groove, a funky bass and build
from there and use some cool sounding synths not General midi sounds off your laptop!

Actually, a grain of salt is quite a nice concept - two nasty elements, sodium and
chlorine, combining to form a compound essential to life on this planet. A message in

I usually avoid negative comments about other peoples music because music is subjective in
its nature. Personally I didn't enjoy it, I felt it musically didn't do anything for me
and the mix was not to a professional yet alone semi professional standard. The debate on
"black music" is irrelevant and if it were I wonder why you called it a Ke$ha type beat
cause the last time I checked she wasn't black. Anyway my advice to you is take on the
criticism and try and better yourself
Good luck in your future

sounds like a trumpet is having sex with a talking elmo doll - and the elmo doll isnt a
consenting party. i wouldnt call this "black music" id call it "abrasive noise"
- i dont know where you even pulled the term "black music" from, it seems counter
intuitive and detrimental to society to categorise something of this calibre in such a
way. man, you need to do more with your sounds... im getting all experimental
atm myself but tbh you need to work on structure, melody, and post production
FX/mixing/mastering.

I agree with "it's general MIDI generic sounding" but if he posted this, would you guys
say the same? Dr Dre or is it because Dre is established and has sold
100's of millions of records that you can't critique it. Then again the Spice girls sold
millions, and can't sing, but that's a different argument!!
