Best way to check the effects of dither new
      #839414 - 11/06/10 09:14 AM
Hi

How best do I go about analysing the effect of dither?

I don't want to have to whack my level up to hear the quiet sections; I may risk blasting my ear bone.

If you have access to distortion measuring equipment you can determine whether the dither is working correctly that way.

But that won't assess the psychoacoustic aspects of noise-shaped dithers -- only the ear can do that.

And if you have to use your ear to assess the dither I'm afraid it can only be done practically with realticely low level sound sources... and that may well mean having to wind in some additional monitoring gain whch is, as you say, potentially dangerous to both speakers and ears.

Create a new project in your DAW with only your quiet section in it and loop that. If you have a hardware analogue mute button keep your finger near it, otherwise make sure you can reach the cables and know which to unplug in a hurry. I always feel like I'm handling live explosives when I do this. Best of luck.
