Using kick trigger alongside MIDI controller keyboard new
      #840401 - 16/06/10 02:38 PM
Having just sold an Alesis Control Pad, i'm now left with a Yamaha KP65 kick drum trigger - and was wondering if it were possible to use this to trigger kick drum samples in Kontakt through my keyboard (Novation KS4), via either the sustain or expression pedal inputs perhaps?

I would normally just try these things out and ask questions later, but i'm unsure how to "manipulate" CC messages and the like.

Hi Richie!

As far as I know the KP65 outputs a piezo-generated analogue signal (it's essentially a contact mic), whereas a sustain pedal expects a simple on/off switch to perform its magic, and an expression pedal input expects a variable resistance depending ont he pedal position.

These are all different signals, so a kick drum trigger can’t be plugged into a keyboard without some sort of conversion circuitry.

Ah, yes that would make sense, it being velocity sensistive and all! Thanks for that. Looks like i'll be finger-drumming all the way

Maybe you could pick up a cheap sustain pedal and try using something like the free version of Bome MIDI Translator to convert the data into note info.

(No velocity though - for that I guess you'd need a trigger-to-MIDI converter for your kick pedal.)

Hmmm... just a thought, and I haven't tried it myself. But I'll chuck it into the mix anyway....

As it generates an analogue signal from a piezo you might get some good results by recording it straight into your DAW and then using a beat extraction tool to generate MIDI and/or trigger a sample with the dynamics of your playing.

Yep, that could work Andy.

Watch out what you plug the piezo output into though - some of them can generate several volts when hit really hard, so preferably a very cheap preamp

Don't worry Martin, whatever pre-amp you choose... once it's broken it'll be cheaper
