Hello,

This is my first of hopefully many posts on the SOS forum, as I have quite a few questions that need to be answered.

The most important at the moment, I currently have an 88Key, M-Audio Keystation lying around, waiting to be upgraded to something with a bit more, well, power. I have been looking at various Stage pianos such as the Yamaha CP33 or the Roland FP-4.

Anyway, I need to get rid of this MIDI controller, but the problem is, that is all it is. I can't sell it to anyone I know, or to someone with no basic knowledge of Music and Computers, as it needs some setting up, and is more hassle than say a simple Yamaha keyboard.

Ebay is currently the most likely way of getting of it, but I was wondering if you musical geniuses had any better ideas? I look forward to hearing them. Also, what price would I be looking to sell it for, it is in very good condition.

For me it's this order:
ebay.
Reader's Ads.
local free ads paper.

Reasons why? Even tho it's fleabay, there'll be someone out there somewhere looking for a weighted 88key MIDI controller - might be me if I had the space or need. You'll shift it, with local pickup, providing you're not on a Scottish Island or similar. Now, whether you get the £££ you want for it to buy your next bit of kit I don't think is the question you asked...

Readers Ads is good - but bear in mind, everyone looking at your ad knows a bit about the music biz. Not true with fleabay. Result: you might get less than fleabay if you have a bad auction - but at least you get to set the price.

Local free ads paper - it's people local to you (you aren't going to post an 88key controller are you??). But, as you say, the amount of music pros in your local area might be very limited - it might be just you. On the plus side, that gives you a business opportunity in itself

As for what price - use fleabay as a guide. There'll be a few of those coming up in the next week or so. Watch them, see what they go for - despite some "collectable" bits of kit going for silly prices, stuff that's still available new in the shops seems to settle on a fairly consistent price. (eg - POD 2.0: retail £100; in last week, half a dozen have gone on fleabay for £50 +/- £5)

As I always say – put it up on eBay and start it at 1 pound. Whatever it sells for is what it was worth. You deciding it is worth even one penny more is pointless – it will still be propping up your wall and you’re no better off. If you decide it was worth less then you’ve made some extra money.

So, getting someone else’s opinion of value is not going to help you one jot – all that matters is how much it’s worth to the guy standing in front of you with money in his hand.

...and maybe if you'd auctioned it the way I suggested you would have got £121 pounds - or much more! Who knows?
