      #843369 - 30/06/10 09:18 PM
Hi

as my room is ok but not acoustically treated and would be very hard to treat i have decided to buy a set of decent mixing headphone so i have something solid to use as a reference.

but as it is a bed room is dose have lots of bumpy/ soft surfaces. so there not terrible.

however i still think its a great idea to buy a set of good mixing headphones looking to spend about £100 i did see the m audio Q40's and read some very positive reviews?

http://www.dv247.com/headphones/m-audio-studiophile-q40-professional-headp hones--47628

any other suggestion?

Thanks alot jack

p.s. i wasnt quite sure where to post this so just put it in noob questions

Have a read of this from the January 2010 SoS:

web page

By shopping around you can get the AKG240 for under £100. From personal experience I'm happy with these and the Audio-Technica M40s.

However, if you can run to some more expensive AKG or Sennheiser cans it'll probably pay dividends.

I have the ATH-M40fs (Audio Technica). They were only £50 when I got them though, so under budget.

Good Headphones overall. Nice clarity and strong bass response. I have found the material covering the ear pieces has torn and come off though, which is slightly annoying. There is further material underneath though so I might rip the messy stuff off.

Dig a little deeper and try for some AKG K701s - man and headphones in perfect harmony!

Seriously, AKG701's. Seriously f*****g nice.

Bought mine just over a week ago, so they are more or less worn in, just in time for a big studio project... they're awesome.

I honestly can't describe how good they are.

Listen to Elf, I did, and I'm chuffed to bits!

+1 for Sennheiser HD650

Trouble is these are all way beyond your budget aren’t they Dodger?

Subject to the caveats explained in the SOS article, I can commend the Audio Technica ATH M50s for mixing work. The bass end is impressive, if a little unreliable, but arguably less so than other cans in that price bracket. Street price is around the upper reaches of your budget, maybe a fiver over.

K701s can be had for 150 quid if you shop around a little...

I've never had the pleasure of the HD650, but I'd love to try them if the opportunity ever arises. When you think you've found perfection it is hard to imagine anything 'more perfect'!

Hey

Finding the right pair of headphones is very subjective. Obviously there are the industry standards and i would always start there. Try as many as you can get your hands on. I got a pair of Shure SRH840 about 2 months ago and i would change them for anything, but a mate of mine got a pair of K701s and he says the same.

With regards to the SRH840s they have amazing balance. Nothing is to enhanced and perfect for me. The detail is awesome and having listened back to albums i thought i knew I heard thing id never heard before. They are comfy to where for long periods of time and the durability and workmanship is second to none. They are not the prettiest but unless you are a bit of a pervert it all be about the sound anyway.

I got mine for about £130 from here. Good prices and quick delivery.

What ever you go for I hope you get something you are happy with

Let us no.

If that's perfection, Elf, I can only assume you have round ears, and never look down or tip your head back while wearing them. I loved the sound, though...

None of those actions have ever proved a problem. When I first saw them I groaned at AKG's use of one of those self-adjusting (they never seem to) head bands, but I can honestly say I've not given it a second thought. They're comfortable and sit in place with no problem at all.

Maybe I have a K701-shaped head!

Sadly not.

Mine developed the traditional Sennheiser intermittent cable connector problem, though it did at least take longer than all the other Sennheisers I've got/had.

AKG K701/702 for me now. More comfortable (for me) than the HDs too.

Oh and I prefer the sound of the AKGs.

Hi,

don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm a glasses wearer that often finds that headphones get uncomfortable after a while as they press down on the arm of my specs on my ears. Does anyone else have this problem? are any of the 'phones suggested comfortable for speccy-four-eyes?!

As you'll see from my avatar I'm also a specsman. I use AKG240s - headband very similar to the 701 - and the Audio-Technicas. Don't have any problems, although the sidearm on my specs is very thin and close fitting to my head. The AKGs are particulary comfortable.

Laser treatment dude.

At Sos we provide ourselves in providing a low cost alternative to the Harley St clan.

In fact, I am fully trained in the art of 'pupil glazing' and can facilitate a non refundable service for as little as the cost of a Behringer pencil.

Standard can't sue me disclaimer in place.

I wear specs.

The HD 800 are the most comfortable, but I have had no problems with either the HD 600 or HD 650.

I also wear the HD 25 with no problems (though I prefer the velour earpads).

I have not tried the K701/702.

My go-to open headphones are now the HD 800 as they are considerably better than the others (though x3 the price )

They are nice cans, though, as also are the Ultrasone Edition 8.

Two of the top closed cans around.

But, for editing and mastering I prefer open cans and use the HD 800.

In the mid bracket the HD 650, HD 600 and AKG K701 seem to be equally regarded. Yes, some will wave the flag for one over the other, but the number of flags seem to be about equal for each.

My favorite cans are a pair of worn-out Sony headphones. Don't know the model number but they were around 100 quid about 12 years ago or so.

The cushions have almost fully disintegrated and so far I can't be bothered to have them replaced. They sound fairly balanced though a tad bass-heavy at times. Decent value for money, I'd say.

Cheers,
Frank
