Help with playing/recording external midi synths! new
      #848183 - 21/07/10 08:19 PM
Hi, I have plenty of soft synths so decided to venture into the world of external rack mount synths. I have two external midi synths I purchased on ebay. One is a Yamaha TX7 & the other is a Yamaha TX81Z.
I am using Logic Pro 8 software, I also have a M Audio 8x8 USB Midi Interface.
I want to be able to hear & program midi & record the synths through Logic 8. Can anyone advise of how to set everything up with the equipment I have?

Help is much appreciated,

Many thanks!

I also have a Novation Nocturn 25 midi controller keyboard I plan to use with the external synths.

Connect the MIDI outs from your interfaces to both module's MIDI in.

Connect the audio outputs of both modules to your computer's interface audio inputs.

In Logic, either use the External Instrument plugin to "connect" to the modules via MIDI and audio, or in the environment create new "Instrument" objects for each module, name them and set the MIDI port and channel they are on, and set a couple of tracks to input monitor from the audio inputs they are plugged into.

More in the manual.

Thankyou very much for the reply, will my USB midi keyboard automatically work with this setup aswell? Or will have to configure it? Thanks

It just sends MIDI to your computer - there's nothing to configure, as long as the device works and is recognised by OSX.
