Yamaha FC3 pedal on my Edirol PCR500 midi controller not working

Hi there,
Hope someone can help. I just bought a yammy FC3 pedal for sustain,
plugged it into my Edirol PCR500 keyboard in the sustain jack and it doesn't do anything.
I'm controlling a virtual keyboard in Logic.
Seems to work on the damper ok,
but no affect on the sustain. And there's no settings on the pedal do do anything to it.
Any one have any ideas on what I need to do to get it working?
Many thanks in
advance...

Are you sure the Edirol knows what to do with anything beyond a simple on/off switch?

hi,
no, i don't, however, the pedal is working on the dampening input (next
jack up) correctly dampening the more I push the pedal down. I have used a very simple
foot sustain (on/off) on the sustain before and it worked. Is there some sort of setting I
can use to enable the foot switch to work maybe ??
Thanks for any help

Have you checked the Edirol manual? If you don't have it, you can download from Roland USA
support pages. Andy

Mmm, strange. The polarity is the first place to look but you say the pedal works so it's
a config issue then.

yes, the pedal works on the expression plug, as I depress the pedal the volume of the
sound is reduced to zero. It is certainly a configuration issue if you are indeed allowed
to configure the keyboard hold plug. I saw another post on the internet while searching
that said the FC3 and Edirol PCR keyboards were not compatible but it doesn't say why, it
was just a comment. Since it's a midi controller keyboard and you can apparently configure
the pedal to do other things, I'm thinking that it might be possible to map the pedal to
midi hold somehow. But I don't know how to do that. Was hoping someone has already been in
the position and knew a work around.
I guess I can get me another pedal like
the FC4 or something that is a simple on/off switch and use the FC3 as the expression
pedal but since I just paid for the pedal, I was really hoping I could use it for
hold/sustain.
If anyone has any ideas how to program the pedal plug on the
keyboard I'd be very grateful.
Thanks in advance

The FC3 is a TRS plug whereas normal sustain pedals are TS. It sounds like the FC3 is in
fact an expression pedal "disguised" as a sustain pedal. If that is so, you are probably
connected across the constant value resistor and not to the wiper. As a result, it doesn't
do anything.
Is the reduction to zero volume smooth (when you use it as an
expression pedal)? If so this is the problem. In that case no amount of internal jiggling
of configuration settings will help. A crossover such as you sometimes need for expression
pedals probably would work but you would be better of getting an on/off sustain pedal
instead. You can get a unit such as the VFP-1/25 that has a polarity switch on it. The
Onstage KSP100 says it has a polarity switch too and its half the price but I have never
used one whereas I have used a vfp 1/25 for a long time with no problems.
BTW,
when I say no amount of configuration, I mean with it plugged into the sustain socket. It
may be possible to get the expression pedal input to transmit using midi controller 64
instead of 7 and then it may work as a sustain pedal. Whether this works will depend on
the range of values that get transmitted and exactly how your synth converts those values
to on and off - there may be options to configure that as well. This is more than I would
want to futz with on the bandstand.

Hello,
I have the FC-3 at home and it is indeed a continuous sustain pedal, not
a switch pedal. So yes it is a kind of expression pedal with a spring.
Usually
Yamaha and Roland pedals have inverted polarities. I have a Yamaha FC-7 expression pedal
and, when using it with the Novation Remote 25 that follows the Roland system, I have to
add an adapter cable that swaps the T and R pins of the pedal TRS jack.
When
plugging the FC-3 in the expression pedal socket of the Remote 25, the CC value is 0 when
depressed and 92 when released, and the curve is not linear at all. But when adding
the adapter cable, the CC value is 120 when depressed and 0 when released, and the curve
is linear.
Maybe you should try an adapter cable too.
That said, why
did you get the FC-3 for switching only? It's intended to be used for continuous control
in the first place.
Best regards -j

All good info there Bob
If anyone wants any more detail on this MIDI expression pedal polarity issue and adpator
cables, I wrote a FAQ on it in my PC Music FAQs section that I'm amazed to see has thus
far had over 16,000 views
