I cannot get to www.sosawards.comtrying to get to it from this page: http://www.soundonsound.com/sosawardssays: "Voting opens on 23 September to 30 November" it seems it should
be up and ready to rock, but it's a dead link.

That's odd... it works for me, but then I'm based in the UK. I'll check whether the link
works from US IP addresses tomorrow morning!
Cheers,
Chris

it worked. up until the point that i read the rules....
based on those
rules, strictly speaking, not one audio professional is eligible to vote or win.

oh it looks like it's banning USA IP addresses... I can get to it with a proxy server.
does that mean I'm not eligible?

Hmmm.... that depends on your
interpretation. You'd have to be speaking *very* strictly...
I presume you're
thinking of the term 'business associate'? Well, if you're purchasing products, or
sourcing products from those companies, then you're a customer, and I couldn't see any
court agreeing that such a relationship could lead to one being defined as a 'business
associate'.
I know some people work freelance writing manuals, or getting
commission on products they sell in the course of their work... that is quite obviously a
direct business relationship.
I suppose the woolly ground would be where one is
providing services gratis to said companies — where there's no element of consideration
(unless you argue that the prestige or experience of doing the job counts!). E.g. forum
moderation; work experience/intern placements and so on.
Basically, though, if
you're not getting paid or getting freebies or heavy personal discounts of some kind from
said companies in return for some kind of goods or service, it looks to me like you're
eligible.

Quite so. I think the term is meant to exclude PR agents, representatives, employees (paid
or unpaid) and the like, not bona fide customers.
And the no-access from
America problem is being investigated as I type. Sorry about that...

...where do we comment about the actual choices to vote on..... ? The ommision of Rokit monitors, the lower end of the SE range and the SM58 is a
shame.....would also have liked to voted on a retailer and computer
supplier/manufacturer/system.... But I did vote....when do i get my prize???

The choices were arrived at after very lengthy and involved discussions involving the
whole SOS production team, and the number of slots in each category was restricted which
is why we weren't able to include every possible contender. But the options that are there
are hopefully representative and span all budget levels.

Yes, you
are definitely eligible to vote. It looks like we had a URL re-direction problem with the
website server, but I'm told it has now been fixed...
Please let me know if you
can now access the voting page or if you are still having problems.

Hugh
Understand Hugh - and you have to have some
cut-off point
however - i was voting for stuff that i didn't have an actual
experience of, cause I have expereince of the older brother -
for example - I
have an olympus ls10...so i voted for the olympus ls11...cause the ls-10 is so great
but surely the testament to the ls-10 was that it's 3 years old and still going
and doing it's job very well
it seems as if the awards are geared
towards very new gear but not recognising that the very BEST gear is timeless.....
Like the SM58
etc etc
and a retailer award would
be nice - sometimes they are the people who really make the difference
(But
then i suppose we cross over into SOS customer feedback surveys...)
I
understand SOS has a difficult time over this - would be great to be a fly on the wall in
the discussion over who makes the cut for the award/voting survey (would maybe more
interesting than the actual award/survey itself...
and how about a sos reviewer of the year survey.....

STILL cannot access.
I was so excited for this. I put it as the first bookmark in
my toolbar so I wouldn't forget... way before the site was even online. I tired voting
from a proxy but it won't let me submit... I assume it quite possibly has something to do
with my ISP since other USA folks seem to be able to get on. I still think it's partly a
sound on sound issue even if it's just one isp that you're not getting along with.
i'm sad.
p.s. most of it is pretty reasonable, but I think the preamp choices were a bit
lacking...
no john hardy, BLA auteur, DW fern, or RNP (among others)?

Like the SM58
Hmmm... not sure I agree with that. All the products in the list
are currently on sale, which is sensible, but there are some more established designs in
there: the SM7 has seen quite a bit of service in many studios, as has the EV RE20.
Personally, I'd rather see SM7 and RE20 in the list than a 58, whose ubiquity is arguably
more due to its popularity on stage than in the studio. And I'd probably also rather see a
Beyerdynamic M201, SM57, Beta 58 or Beta 57 than a 58. But that's the nature of
shortlists!

Hi jeffreyjames. Sorry
to hear you're still having problems accessing the site. I have already been in touch
with the guys who host it for us, but they are seeing green lights their end. I've also
been in touch with some chaps in America to test it for us and it worked for them, so I
can simply come to the same conclusion that it must, unfortunately, be a localised
problem. If you're having no success with proxy servers, then all I can suggest is for
you to use an alternative computer at a different location on which to vote - hardly
ideal, I know, but at least you'll have registered your opinions and your chance to win!
I'm sorry there isn't more I can do, but if nothing is showing up for us, our hosts, or
our American buddies, then we can't fix a problem we can't identify.

A long shot, but... the error page isn't still in your cache is it? You've tried hitting
refresh I suppose? Or trying a different browser? I'm guessing it isn't that simple, but
it can't hurt to suggest it...
