Editable arpeggios on a groove box or synth? new
      #865321 - 01/10/10 02:10 PM
Hi, I am looking to update my old but trusty set up. I currently play bass patterns with a TR626 & SH101. I create the patterns on the TR626 to trigger the steps of the arpeggiator on the SH101, via the trigger out. The gives me nice funky bass riffs that I can create instantly live; important as I'm in an improvising electronica band.

I don't want to rig up 2 pieces of very old gear for my gigs anymore. I've tried an MC303, but arpeggios cannot be edited & tried a MicroKorg, but the arp can only be edited/muted over 8 steps.

So is there a groove box or synth with a 16 step arpeggiator, where individual steps can be muted of accented? ideally I'm looking for an drums/bass groovebox solution.

Andrew

The Korg Electribes maybe? Although you're right, it's one of those things that can be less flexible than you'd expect. It just varies from box to box. You might have to just study manuals, boring but it'll give you the answers. All the Roland and Korg manuals are on their respective sites.

What else? Um ... Yamaha RM1X probably.

Lots of the larger worstation style synths have fully editable patterns/arps/sequences.

You might want to look again at the MC series as it has 'phrases' that can be assigned to any key. I would have thought that that was more in line with your improv working method. Simply set up a load of phrases and map them to keys. The jp8000 also let you do this and was small, light and sounded great (in fact I think it's a standard feature on Roland synths these days).

Phrases and the like? Hows about the Akai MPC series?

Have you checked out THIS it looks like it would be right up your street

edit: I see you want an all-in-one box.. shame.. It would work quite nicely mated up with a nice rack synth and your 101

Although I didn't really buy the Blo for it's Arp's it's a great feature that's very fun to play with even though it might look daunting having just 3 knobs and one button to operate the arps..more easy than my Micro Q also thanks to a bigger screen! Other than that it's my in yer face Techno stab machine hahah no really! or wavetable weirdness

yes, gig down in Brighton area quite a lot with Broken Star. There's a monthly electronic/improv club in town called Spirit of Gravity, which supports the local scene. If you want more details can supply.
