Accurate Treble with Monitors

Hi,
I recently did a mix on my Event TR8 and played it in a properly treated
studio. The bass was fine, more or less how I expected which was a pleasant surprise. The
treble was quite different though, not very clear at all. Sounded over compressed and a
bit boxy.
I'm just wondering if there's any smallish speakers which would be a
compliment to my TR8s and give a more accurate representation of the medium to high end of
the spectrum. Not fussed about bass obviously..
If anyone has any suggestions,
I'd be very interested to hear them,
Thanks, Henry

The question that begs itself is did you do the mix in a properly treated studio?
If it is not translating to a better listening environment very well it is probably
indicative that you need to attend to your room treatment.
The Events are "good
enough" for most purposes. Spending £500 or £50,000 on a second set of monitors will
not change the problem. A couple of hundred quid on room treatment probably will.

The TR8's are perfectly good monitors. If the issues weren't apparent in your room it
might be better to look at that first. Otherwise you risk the same problem with a second
pair of monitors. It's possible that your stereo image isn't accurate which is
leading you to over EQ and compress to make things stand out. Double check your monitor
placement and the mirror points on the side walls for reflections. Keep your computer
monitor behind the line of your TR8's and watch out for reflections from your mixer if you
use one. And try auditioning your mixes on headphones too, see if you can pick up the
differences at source. Basically, don't spend until you know where the problem
lies. Andy

Thanks for the help. I'm actually using one monitor as not enough room for two and it
also avoids issues with phasing and the sweet spot between the two speakers which is hard
to setup in tight spaces.
The room is probably to blame for the lackluster
sound but probably also my ears as I spend ages on the bass sounds but not much on treble,
something I can now spend more time on. I was sort of under the impression most of the
issues with room treatment affected bass and less so for treble but I probably got that
one slightly wrong.
I'll see what sort of treatment I can get for the room so
thanks for the help as usual chaps.

You're using ONE monitor?
Seeing as the perception of brightness is very
dependent on where it is in the stereo field {listen to mono recordings to hear this
effect} I'm not surprised! Second - although it's easier to get the top end okay in an
untreated room it's by no means trivial. Third - and by no means least - did you reference
agist anything else in the listening room?

If I'm using one monitor then surely the stereo image will be the same wherever I listen?
Also, I haven't studied any other sources in much detail or compared when mixing but I
will now, thanks for your advice sir

maybe there is something lost in translation here...
ONE monitor won't produce
any stereo information. Two speakers playing back a mono source don't do the same thing as
one speaker. Can you just confirm that your monitoring with ONE speaker?

Yep, ONE speaker. I assumed as there was no stereo information having two speakers would
be irrelevant...

Well - the top end sounding boxy isnt surprising then. Not down to anything wrong - but
mono recordings are a bit that way "up top". Combine that with a compromised acoustic in
your work space and you have a recipe for "poor translation"....

I'm mixing in the box so not actually recording, just mixing. I'll get collecting the egg
boxes then...

By "mono recording" I mean a mix.

I hope that was a joke Henrico

Egg boxes are the biggest timewasters known to man when it comes to acoustic
treatment, since they only do anything useful above a few kilohertz, leaving the rest of
the sound still bouncing all over the room

Not so because EVRYWHERE else the music is listened to it will
be heard as a phantom image on two speakers/ pod crappo'.
