What 'Mastering' software or plug-ins do you use? new
      #867638 - 12/10/10 03:37 PM
I don't have anything at present, but have been advised to look at Brainworx BX Digital V2 or Izotope Ozone to add the final polish to a mix, along with fine tuning such as maximising volume to commercial levels.

So... What do you use and why do you like it?

A mastering engineer. I like them because they can do the job right and are usually objective enough to make a difference.

Ozone 4

I'm completely clueless about mastering and have found the presets in Ozone a great starting point and with a few tweaks get me in the ball park.

YMMV

A proper mastering engineer cannot be beaten, although if your clients just want loud then get the steve slate mastering thing, that goes loud, really loud.

I think this thread should be moved to mastering section.

My bad.. Feel free to move.
Other than that.. Please proceed!

I have no doubt a mastering engineer is far, far superior to some software, but I can't afford a mastering engineer a this stage so thought I would try software. Might help my learning as well.

You can try free online mastering. Maybe that would give you an idea how grand an idea of hiring an ME can be.

Maybe something like this.

mastering on BM15s !!! Blimey! .... pretty room though.... and I REALLY liked "The company Hotline Mastering is based on high end digital technology and as a result we will surprise you with the best sound quality, without the racks of unnecessary equipment that our competitors use.".... Turn a disadvantage into an advantage !! lovely....tell Greg to lose the EMI console !!

My fave mastering s/w - YouSendit!

Slate Digital limiter is good - but I have to say - in the wrong hands just distorts!! It's not a set it forget it" piece... very good though.

In all seriousness - for quick fixes - I find Ozone to be the job. Anything more than that then I'll send it off, I'm not a mastering engineer at all......

UAD stuff here, often:

Fairchild > Manley Massive > Precision Limiter

But then I'm generally trying to make things sound wonderful rather than loud!

The "real mastering engineer" suggestions aren't much help without a recommendation. Anyone can set up an on line service, stick the mix through a preset on Vintage Warmer and get a bit of a wow factor.

I'd suggest PSP Xenon is worth a look.

I should point out that I am in no way a mastering engineer either, but it's helpful when the band asks for a loud mix although i will always go into how they should use a proper mastering engineer, (I am pretty sure most people ignore me mind but ah well)

Okay so suggestions;

In direct response the the thread title there is a lot of great software which will get jobs done.

You need to have a listen and try and discern what it can do for you and also understand the types of jobs you might need to get done as well. With that in mind reeling off a list does not seem to make sense.

If you are serious about mastering do a lot of listening to what different software/devices.

Please do watch out with the online places as some people really are not going to do your music any favours. A guy came to me this week after trying 6 x online mastering places and when he got his track
back from me he said...

Quote:

Now thats what i call a f*cki*& master!!

the wav isnt max'd and it has separation, depth and my vocal is out front, the 12 string now has clarity and the bass end doesnt sound like paul mcartneys fart any more!!

Just be a bit savvy.

Yes - the mods know about the editing problem. It wasn't working yesterday and it still doesn't seem to be fixed.
