Keyboard stands suitable for small, three octave synths?
      #871230 - 28/10/10 11:38 AM
I have a compact 37-key synth - an Alesis Micron - that I would like to use at small-scale gigs, such as open mic nights. I use it as a control keyboard for a Roland SonicCell sound module, which plays my backing tracks and sits atop a cymbal stand.

Trouble is, although the Micron sits fine on the top of a two-tier keyboard stand where the support arms can be adjusted appropriately, I don't really have a single-tier keyboard stand that will accommodate it safely - at least not at a height where it would be playable.

I find that both of my current x-stands lock into place slightly too wide for the synth. It will sit on the support arms but only half an inch away from the edges on either side, meaning it would be very easy for someone accidentally to knock the synth off the stand. If I set the stand any higher, bringing the support arms closer together, the synth will be positioned too high up for me to play it properly.

I have a mesh metal shelf that can go on the stand and this has its uses for some types of gear. However, it's heavy/bulky and taking that to a gig would defeat the object of travelling light with a small keyboard in the first place. There's a similar issue with another type of stand that I own - great for holding keyboards in a studio environment but not suitable for gigging short sets where gear needs to be set up quickly and then disassembled just as rapidly.

Does anyone here use a similarly-sized keyboard in a live setting and what solutions have you found for safely accommodating it on a keyboard stand?

how about a little lateral thinking?

You could look for something similar to this. Mounted on a sturdy mic stand.

Or you might use it as inspiration to build something similar yourself. A metal plate, maybe with a folded lip so you can tilt it forward without the keyboard falling off, and a suitable bolt welded to the bottom to attach to the mic stand.
