Hi chums have a choice of used passives at this moment PMC TB2 + Yamaha
ns1000m AE 22 pro What do we think? The Yams are ancient but still linger
in my memory. Roger

Probably aren't many people who have listened to that particular combination. They're also
very different from each other as the NS1000's are much bigger than the others so they
wouldn't be used in the same place as you would use the AE22's. As I remember it, the
NS1000's were aimed at the same market at Spendor BC1's (or was it BC3's) and were
supposed to be much more neutral than other Japanese speakers at the time. The only pair I
ever heard were used as background music speakers in Andertons music shop. James.

Sorry Roger -- missed this the first time out... Quote ROLO46:

The Yamaha's had a great reputation as being
a very fine speaker in its day. But that was a long time ago now and things have moved on
a little, so it might not retain quite the same standing by comparison. It's also
significantly bigger than the others you list and would need a bigger room to really work
properly. More to the point, the drivers will be old and tired and replacements are
probably difficult to source, if not impossible.
The TB2+ is more modern, parts
are still available, and it is a great speaker. Lots of forum members use them and rate
them highly. They need a decent powerful amp if they are to give of their best.
The AE22 is also modern and performs extremely well, with all the temporal advantags of
a sealed cabinet.
I've reviewed and would be quite happy to use either the AE22
or the TB2 as a working monitor.... but I happen to have the TB2s here and get along with
them just fine.

Not passive, but I'm happy with my AE22 actives. I can't make any comparisons
though, unless you are in the market for some Alesis Point 7s!

I have the TB2S+ and love them only because they are brutally honest and uncoloured. I found the AE22s to be good but I would prefer them with a sub but that comes
down to what you need them for, where you are positioned and so on.

Thats more like it chaps I have an AVI 300wpc amp otherwise I would go
active Also have a 18" AVI Volt sub and amp Might include a AVI Pro
9 pair if I can source some But its likely to be the PMC TB2 +. The
Yammys were topdog but replacement berylium tweeters cost £400..... Roger

Berylium is nasty stuff. Don't want to be near that if you're likely to be breaking
tweeters!
The AVI speakers are all pretty good. I've yet to hear one I don't
like.

Yep - I’m still very pleased with the pair of AVI Biggatron’s I use in the sitting
room with my hi-fi Another sealed design with an unhyped bass end. Martin

Not exactly passive but any one tried the big Quad panels recently They might cut it
with a sub? Build quality now excellent they say.

Totally different beast.
Huge, bipolar radiation field, and integration with a
sub will be even more difficult than with a conventional speaker.
Lovely
things, and with fabulous resolution, but a totally different ball park fromthe other
candidates you mentioned.

Hughie Quad are offering refurbished Q63's with latest improved components @ £1300
with 2 yr warranty. What do you think of that? Roger
