iTunes 10 sounds dull new
      #874124 - 11/11/10 11:00 AM
Hi

I just discovered itunes 10 makes my mixes sound dull even with the eq off.

Just thought I would share that as some people might be having problems - or is this common knowledge?

Have a rummage in the preferences, and make absolutely certain that not only the EQ is off. But also "SoundCheck" and also "SoundEnhancer"
Both of those royally fudge up the sound, in my experience.

iTunes is essentially a glorified QT front end, so with those turned off, it shouldn't sound any different to any other file player. I believe null tests have also proved as much. Although i've not tested it myself.
That said, there were 1 or 2 versions of iTunes that didn't sound right. Around the V7 period I think it was. I can't say i've noticed any issue with V10..

I don't recall Quicktime sounding all that spiffing either mind. Different players can sound dull I find depending on the tweaks done to the playback settings/codecs used in the background and you don't always have access to them in the front end to change them.

Winamps the perfect example of this if you A/B it with Soundforge/Audacity it sounds dull and lifeless and always has done. I'd fire up S.F. and do the same test with Quicktime but I refuse to install on my machines.

Nothing wrong with V10.1 on a Mac

Nothing wrong with 'sound enhance'if listening on clapped computer speakers and also on hifi ones for spacial enhancements with a duff album.

All in moderation of course.

As for 'sound check' used with IVolume this is the answer to Tunes leveling problems.

Its non destructive.

The equaliser is a powerful beast, tread carefully or run out of headroom fast.

Fine here on a Mac running through studio monitors. Sound Check etc not checked.
