SH-101 or MC-202??
      #876489 - 22/11/10 01:00 PM
Simples really, which one would you go for and why?

I can't personally decide...other than the slight differences in design (101 has white noise, 202 don't but has LFO delay which the 101 doesn't)
Do they sound the same bar those differences?

I also hear that if you trigger the 202 with CV there is a some latency as the signal is quantized through the CPU and no slide when using cv/gate, right?

The way I see it is like this:

101 Pro's:
Built in keyboard
White Noise (Very useful)
-----
202 Pro's:
Better Sequencer albeit complicated but could potentially create some interesting patterns on it that I wouldn't of thought of with a keyboard and +1 for slide and Accent
LFO Delay is cool
CV/Gate inputs so can be triggered by my main sequencer
202 Con: No white noise generator and poss latency when triggering via cv/gate?

Other than that i'll go for the cheapest option (probs 202) unless there is a considerable sound difference between the 101 and 202

And no I don't want to make acid with one or want to sound like a 303 but those lovely 101 tones which can be heard all over early Future Sound Of London and Boards Of Canada and just about every other 90's act

You can add Accent to the list of 202 pros. It can also play to sequences simultaneously though I've never tried.

The noise generator is one reason I'll never part with my SH though...

There's not much between them anymore price-wise. Go for the SH!

I have procrastonated a lot with this and then considered other synths initially beeing put off by the price to errm 1osc ratio...and decided with the 101 for may reasons mainly beeing it's sound, the 202 will never be contemplated after my mate tried to explain it to me then me trying to read the manual...really it ain't for me!

Now it's just waiting for one for a good price which is another thing! lol £350 max for me

Would love and pay more for a red one though

The funny thing is that I have both... and have been thinking if it had to be one or the other, which one would it be... maybe make a movie.. Dragon's choice - LOL

Would have to say the 101 - its more hands on

But had fun too... with the 202, and bits of it are blue

The one thing that I sort of liked about the 202 was being able to build up tunes / songs with it in step time - however I have long gone past the painful process of play-by-numbers, but it was fun at the time, when you have the time

Get a red 101 with the mod grip.

Mind you I did enjoy the 202 for knocking out some of the old Depeche Mode type of lines.

Hi – I had both for a long time but did end up selling the 202 but it really was a very close thing. I loved the 202’s accent, especially when you put it on every step – this definitely makes a sound that the 101 is not capable of – instant Higher State of Consciousness!!

Don’t forget the 202 has the crappy CV via the CPU thing so CV latency is an issue unless you get one that has been modified with extra CVs that bypass the CPU.

Its also worth looking at the 202 Hack
program for simpler sequencer operation.

..but you have decided on a 101 so ignore all he above

Good luck,

Paul
