I don't have a Nord (lucky you), but I'm not quite sure where you're at. You're able to select and play with different programs and performance presets...? And you know the basics of subtractive synthesis...? Could you be more specific about what you'd like to be able to do...?

Read the manual?

Not sure what other info we can give you, unless you want a complete guide to programming synths....

(oh go on then)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

What I am trying to find out is if i can infact use the nord rack with out external controllers and generate sound from the unit it self? I have been searching the web for the past fortnight to find the answer but nothing and youtube videos seem to suggest it does work like this (or so i presume).

It does work fine with my keyboard controller and yes i know about subtractive synthesis as I studied it as part of a degree i did years ago and use reason/reaktor but having been busy with my current job I have started forgetting what i once knew.
I also read the manual and tried what it said but nothing. By the way if it helps its the first nord rack.

Cheers Ross

It sounds like you need to get a sequencer that can output midi (I don't think Reason does this), a midi interface for your computer, and a midi cable from your interface midi out into the Nord's midi in. If you want to record the results you will need an audio in on your computer (it probably has this already) and connect the audio out of the Nord into it.

The cheapest way to try this out is probably to use the Reaper sequencer demo, and get a USB to midi cable.

Thanks voodoo raymond, that is probably exactly what im after, like i have said im a bit newb to hardware synths, more used to software stuff with a midi controller or reason lol.

I have a mac with mbox2 and ptle with a midiman 2x2 midi interface so sorted in terms of connectivity. Can you recommend any sequencers worth while?

Thanks.

If you don't have a sequencer, you could start with Reaper since it's inexpensive and you may find it does everything you need. You'll be able to integrate it with Reason via Rewire.

If you have PTLE that will do the job perfectly well. You create a MIDI track and route it to drive your Nord, then take the audio out of the Nord and into an input on the MBox, and set it to record/monitor in PTLE. You could connect the Nord's MIDI out to the computer as well if you want to be able to record program changes etc.
