That's a tricky one, and I should say in advance I know very little about this instrument
so it's just speculation. Looks beautiful. Seems that's close to the original RRP (quoted
as £5000+VAT unexpanded in SOS July 94.) A US one was apparently offered for about £4500
in 2006, then dropped to £3800, and didn't sell (see below).
Synth price
hikes have mostly been associated with analogue gear in the past, and even then things
have often only inflated to around the original RRP. For instance, the Jupiter 8 was
originally listed at £4000, and although second-hand prices have shot up in the last few
years, that's probably about what they're worth now. The Wave is a rare and great-looking
instrument though, so it's anyone's guess what it will be worth in 10 years.
My guess is that this is probably the maximum you'd expect to pay for a Wave. There
aren't many synths that list at £6K, and I don't think you could call it a bargain. But,
someone might buy it, and you never know when you'll see another, so it's a bit of a
gamble. I might consider it if I was hell-bent on getting one and could afford it, but I
wouldn't buy it as an investment at that price; not when you could get a Prophet VS, say, for
£1200.

Cool, I was just thinking about the good ol' PPG. Never got on with V2, but that looks
nice.

Loved the PPGs. I had the Waveterm B and it made me moist.
The Wave is like
owning a Veron.
I was after a black Wave with the 4 voice option at a time
when the Waves were being built to order out of Germany. Turdkey contacted me and said
they had one. I specified colour and expansion and they told me they had a mint one i
stock.
I drove down, spent the mandatory year finding a parking space and selling my
left nut to fund the meter. I walked and was directed to the abode of the Wave. It was a
blue Wave, no expansion and it was in pieces on the floor. I can't recall if I hit the
salesman but that ended my Wave dream.
TBH, so many of today's vintage gear
is so pricey that 6 gees is not far off some of the second hand prices of other collectors
synths.
If I had kept my synths and sold them now I could pay off my
mortgage. I had some select bits of gear: 2500, 2600, System 100, Memory Moog, Prophet,
Model D, Dataton 300, EMS Polysynth, SH3/5/7, DX1, Xpander, Matrix, OB8/Xa, Sem
etc.....
So, the question is: do you need one, are you married or do you need
to attract muso tech babes or are you a slut like the rest os us and want to own a piece
of synth porn that will always make you moist?
FWIW, if Martin would loan me
the money and I didn't care about what it could do I would buy one in a heartbeat simple
because I want to.

(I'd never heard of a couple of these. The Polysynthi looks amazing.
And what the heck is a Dataton?)

The company had a huge line of
modules but went bust so I could only expand to the degree that you see in the pics.

I restored most of those with the help of James Walker. I remember we spent
weeks and 80 squids just to get the knobs on the system 100 sequencer redesigned to the
correct specs. Mind you, it did look lovely. The Solus killed me as I had to take
out the entire bus bar (unsoldering blah blah) and getting new 2 hair contacts to replace
the existing ones. Sounded great later. The OB8 was also serviced and I changed the
screws on the side panels with new gold screws. I know, I know, anal, but you know how it
is with us sluts... I did the same for my 303s and 909s. Had custom strips made for
them with new knob and plates and they looked fantastic. Why am I going on
about all this? Necro, really sorry for hijacking m8. Shall cease immediately.

Oooh. A Moog System 15. You bastard! Always wanted one of those. Had a 2600
myself (the original, not the orange one) and a Solus - I've never met anyone who even
knew about that synth, let alone had one. I don't lust after any of the stuff
now, not when you can get this, brand new, for around £1,700...

You tried any of the Macbeth's HS? I was going to get Tony to build me a
specific modular at Oakley but never got round to it. Just to piddle you off a
tad, I had the Grey Meanie as well.....muhahahaha...

Ha!
Can't justify it, can't afford it,
don't need it but I could make a fool of myself if either of these came my way at the
right price...
I cut my teeth on those as a teenager!
Sigh!

Yeah. I'm on the same page m8. Either will do. Played on the Synthi and loved it.
But if Martin would loan the money he never promised I would use it to buy a
Buchla.........

looks like I'm going to have to pass on this one, just cant afford it at the moment unless
i sell my genelec 1038s which ain't going to happen.
i do want one as an
instrument tho rather than an investment, lets just hope there not 3 times the price of
this one in 10 years time.

I would love a Wave myself & almost bought one a few times when they were going for
about half price, ( when I had the cash) but I went for a Prophet VS instead. When
I was researching the merits of the Wave, I was interested to note that a few people who
had spent time with Waves & Microwave 2s/ XTs, reported that they were very similar in
sound & range of sound & that the Wave wasn't really any more impressive
sonically, despite it having analogue filters & user defined wave usage. I have
the XT & love it, but I would still seek out & buy a Wave if I had the spare cash,
its just such an inspiring looking instrument.

Zukan, nice collection! I've never seen the series-100 sequencer before, and are those
speakers, wow! I was wasn't even born yet when they were new, so I have an excuse Actually I used to work in a synth shop which specialized in the classic Japanese gear.
Your things look fantastic, I can tell you take great care of them. Back on
topic: Necromunger, as other people have said it's so hit or miss what will be
valuable. Unfortunately I only see vintage synths depreciating, except maybe for certain
nostalgic collectors. Selling such niche items for top dollar (or pound, sorry I'm a
Knickerbocker ) is going to take a lot of time and effort.

Some beautiful gear there Zukan - I notice nobody's mentioned the reverse key Poly 800
though... I narrowly missed a Solus a while back and bought a CS-15 instead.
Later, I just missed out on a System 100 keyboard, so bought a near-minty SH-09 to console
myself. I've mostly got over synth GAS and have moved onto recording chain GAS
now, though I do still find myself accidentally ending up with stuff. A whole other world
of pain to get stuck into!

Accidentally? Ah, so that's how you explain it to the missus!
