Notator freezing on disk load new
      #880045 - 07/12/10 07:44 PM
Having a problem with my Atari STE, Notator 3.1, Unitor2 and Log 3 combo where as Notator is loading in off the disk drive, it'll freeze on the main loading page. The disk drive also falls silent.
But if I remove the Unitor2 and Log3 and load Notator with only the Notator dongle in place I have no problems.
Obviously somethings up with both the Unitor2 and Log3, as i get the freeze when trying with either on its own.
Guessing the contacts need cleaning would be my first thing. What's the best way to clean the contacts etc?

I think you'll need Notator 3.21 to use the log3 which was really designed for Notator Logic. 3.21 is the last version of Notator and you should be able to find it on the net.

try here:

Try a bit of alcohol on a cotton bud/q-tip or an eraser.

Hi Jauqq,
I hope that you're NOT using the separate Notator dongle as well as Log 3, as Log 3 contains a Notator dongle itself! As you say, the contacts may need cleaning, but also check the temper of the spring contacts in the connections of both Log 3 and Unitor 2. This is a rare symptom but Barrie provided the answer for me some time ago (thanks Barrie ).
The contacts that grip the spade connectors lose their springiness (temper) over time and can fail to make contact, even if you've cleaned them. Simply get a 2mm screwdriver and GENTLY ease them together. Then when you connect Log 3 and Unitor all together contact will be restored and Notator will be able to read the dongle inside Log 3 and make contact with Unitor. If Notator can't read the code on Log 3, that's why it hangs up.
Hope this helps,
Best wishes,

Dave.

Hi Dave,
No im not using all the dongles together as i know that would be very bad!!

When cleaning the Unitor2 and Log3 connectors is it ok to use alcohol and a cotton bud on them? The part on the Log3 that goes into the Atari, and the only connector on the Unitor2? Dont want to damage the connectors with alcohol.

I'll also give the Log3 pins a go with a 2mm screwdriver.

Thanks

Hi Jauqq,
isopropyl alcohol is fine on all the dongles and plastics. It floats the dirt off, doesn't attack anything, and does not leave a residue once it's evaporated. Simply dunk a cotton bud in the alcohol, wipe on the contacts and you'd be amazed how much grot comes off -how it gets in there in the first place is a total mystery to me, unless dirt is attracted by static electricity somehow? I've no idea meself.

Anyway that should get you back up and running.
Best wishes,

Dave.
