Sennheiser HD650

I purchased these high-end babies a while ago. Whilst being very detailed and useful as
2nd/3rd reference I sometimes feel they over-accentuate bottom end. To see exactly what's
happening I emailed the Sennheiser people asking for the Frequency Response graph. Here's
what I got: You can download the user manual here: http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/sennheiser/products.nsf/resources/545E81B7ABD6
E6A2C12574330042FAEE/$File/HD650.pdfManuals for most Sennheiser products are
available to download and there is an archive section for older products too at: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/service_download
Neither of which actually provides a FR graph. Am I really asking for
something that is out of the ordinary? Has anyone seen an accurate FR for these
headphones? Thoughts/comments welcome

very helpful thanks - Extremely useful site!
Did they then mic up the signal in
an unechoic chamber to generate the FR (in a similar way it's done with loudspeakers)?

No. The
headphones have to be placed on something that resembles the human head because the
physical coupling is critical to the overall response, and the mic is placed in what would
be the ear canal. However, as you can imagine, the precise dimensions and distances
involved have significant affects on the results obtained, so it's not a trivial process.
There are standardised measurement techniques available.
I don't find the
HD650s bass heavy either, for the record.

Nor do I - I've mixed a lot with mine, and rely on them as much
as I do my little ATC loudspeakers for bass end.

Slightly off-topic but still on Sennheiser headphones... I'm thinking of upgrading to
HD650s to mix on (I move fairly frequently at the moment so getting sexy monitors makes
less sense what with changing room size/acoustic properties etc. I think). How much
difference does a good headphone amp make, compared to, say, the headphone output of an
M-Audio Omni I/O interface, or a Line6 POD XT? I'm guessing the headphone output on a POD
isn't necessarily the best quality, but what about the OMNI interface, or a similar
small-sized audio interface like a Mackie Onyx Blackjack?

I do all mixing with HD650s and never find 'em bass heavy. I wonder if the issue is
somewhere else in your chain?

I use them and they are not bassy especially when I compare them to my Grade SR325s.
Perhaps your other monitors are bass light making the 650s sound heavy, what are your
other monitors?

...and where are both the monitor and your ears placed with respect to them in your
listening room?
If like many people you've ended up with your ears 50% from
the front of the room you'll be sitting in a huge bass trough as far as the loudspeakers
are concerned
