Video Capture Via HDMI
      #884663 - 31/12/10 11:13 PM
Does anyone know if there are any any capture cards for HDMI?..
Preferably express card as I have a Macbook Pro.
Failing that, is there a way of capturing into Firewire?..

Hmm the Matrox MXO2 Mini comes to mind. It's available with an Express Card 34 connection, and will allow you to capture HDMI in all its glory.

Depending on what you want to do with it though, you may find a consumer solution allows you to capture HDMI for less. A quick bit of Googling shows the Hauppage HD PVR, though this will encode the 13.5Mbs AVCHD, which is not too sharp, while the MXO will let you capture higher bit-rates.

Bear in mind that these cards won't capture HDCP encrypted streams without you converting them to analogue video first. HDCP is designed to stop direct copying of BluRay or digital TV etc, the same way people used to dub cassettes!

Firewire is a maximum of 800Mbps in the FW800 form while HDMI is up to 5Gbps, so I doubt you'll find a way to capture full-quality HD from an HDMI via Firewire.
