What is interleave? new
      #902187 - 19/03/11 08:45 PM
I ran into a problem with a new feature, FX Chain, in SONAR X1. FX Chain lets you store multiple FXs in one preset so that you can just insert the FX Chain instead of manually selecting multiple FXs each time. However, when I did this, upon playback, the track would start late, play back at 1/2 speed and down an octave. The folks at Cakewalk acknowledged that this was indeed unintended behavior, a bug, that only occurred when a stereo FX was stored in the FX Chain preset and then inserted into a mono track. They told be to just set the tracks interleave to stereo as a work around.

So, what the heck is interleave in this context?

Hmmm...no takers?

Either this is a tough question or it's such an easy noob question it doesn't even warrant a response?

An 'interleaved' stereo file is simply a single file containing both left and right audio data, as opposed to two mono files - one for left and one for right.

Maybe they mean for you to convert your mono audio file into a stereo interleaved file and use your stereo FX chain on the resulting stereo track to cure your specific problem?

Never used Sonar, so can't be more specific.

OK, your answer is very clear and makes sense. However, the "interleave" switch(icon) just seems to be a dual state button...interleave or non-interleave. When I click on the icon the results is instantaneous...I don't see a pause while it creates two mono tracks when I click it on and nothing when I click it off. I accept your answer as correct and that's what makes this so puzzling.

The interleave button in Sonar simply specifies how the signal is sent to downstream plugins. If you turn it on, it copies your mono signal into both channels, creating a stereo signal. You won't see anything happen on-screen or notice any delay, it's just processing the track in this way as it goes along.

I hope that makes things clearer. Does turning it on solve your problem?

Ahhh...the light bulb flickers on.

So, the new feature in SONAR X1, "FX Chain," has a bug. If I use a stereo plugin in FX Chain with the stereo interleave set to off I get the unintended result as specified above. If I switch the interleave off the unintended result is gone...and back again if I switch the interleave back to stereo again.

Thanks for the info.
