5K to a first time ebayer with no feedback and more importantly a horrendous taste in

Because someone is really going to be plopping down 5K on an old instrument when they
haven't a clue what it is - yeah right... > "I would also like the winner to
pay CASH ON COLLECTION only." More hmm... Come round to my gaff - bring 5K in
cash please. Yeah right!

No, only the top few bidders,
or those still thinking of bidding, think it's worth that.
Others might
think, for example, it's worth 2K when they bid at a lower price but have since pulled out
- it doesn't mean those people all implicitly think it's worth 5K.
Anyhow -
it's worth however much someone is willing to pay for it. :shrugs:

Yeah but you going of about how it seems like a dodgy ebay auction was not my initial
point.
My point is Jupiter 8s are going for 5k and people are paying it or
willing too.

Well, they're only getting rarer, I guess.
I'd still love one, and if I bathed in cash I'd probably pay what it takes to get one to
use, at least for a while, before I then sold it on, probably losing no money in the
process...

No I dont think you could loose money on a J8 Desmond, your dead right.
But
these synths are now well and truly for those with a great degree of expendable cash.
Just 15 years ago these traded hands for £500. Talk about an investment.

Indeed. And TB303's were £50. And DX100's for £65. And CS01's for £30. And Moog
Prodigy's for £100.
It's a different world entirely, now.
I
think JP8's are also pretty reliable, unlike some other vintage monters...

Desmond,
Yeah but the 303 you mention goes for £1500 tops what is bad
enough, but not anywhere near 5K.
Moog Prodigies are only £500 just like
any Juno or basic decent mono or poly, so id say thats about the norm as there not making
any more so with supply and demand id say £500 is about right for a good condition
analogue.
The other examples you offer are terrible. Out of all the
analogues you could have picked these are amongst the cheapest today as no one wants any
of them.
The DX 1000 currently on EBay now for £25 buy it now, and going no where
fast. So thats actually cheaper than back in the day. Yamaha CS01's regularly trade
hands for £100.
But to help you emphasise your point Minimoog Ds that used
to be £750 but now go for around £2000 or Pro 5's the same.
But £5k, is a
different league of expensive.
And as I say, con or not people are prepared to pay that.

I was giving examples of stuff (not
necessarily analog) that was really cheap back in the day, that still should be cheap, but
aren't.

Er... you mean this one?

ical_Instruments_Pro_Audio_Synthesisers_CV&hash=item4aa9cb3b5e#ht_500wt_922
It's not exactly a DX100 though, is it? You know, one that "works"... That's the only current "DX100" on ebay that I can see, so it must be what you were
referring too. Talk about terrible examples...
DX100's regularly go for £200,
though they are really worth about £40. Same with CS01's.

Ok I made a mistake. Not £25 instead £200.
But really Desmond quoting such
synths for £200 when were talking about a Jupiter 8 gong for 5K is not even a comparison.
Which is my point. The price of Jupiter 8s are way out of sync with the
rest of the market.
I would class the 303/808/909 way over priced synths, not
the rubbish you mentioned (No offence) . But then the Jupiter 8 is in a different league
and I don't get why?
Yes its a great synth blah blah but 5k???

No they are not terrible examples..I don't think any way
DX-100 is a great
example, it may not be 5k but £200 is still WAY too much and mega over inflated price
when you can pick up the same thing (DX-27) for £50 easly still....it just shows how
stupid people really are and also how prices have gone up on even what were the most
undesirable pieces out there...whcih the DX-100 well was

Oh for goodness sake - it was just
some examples of over-inflated ebay prices. No, the specific examples I chose weren't as
expensive as a JP8, the actual cost wasn't the point, the inflation due to "fashion" was.
Can we move on, please, it's boring.

What's 5 bloody grand, jeezuz! if you time-travelled back to 1980, and you seen a
Fairlight CMI ad with the listing price of $25'000 AUS, you would be moaning about that
too.
Besides you could always buy the Jupiter-80 for half the price of the
JP-8.

@ Kwaidan
1 - Im not moaning. Im pointing out how much a Jupiter 5 is now
worth when just 4 years ago or less they were worth £1500.
2 - The Fairlight
cost that much because they cost nearly that much to make. They were ground braking
technology back then.
3 - If 5k is nothing to you why don't you send everyone
who has contributed to this thread a nice 5 grand??? Because your talking bollox. And 5K
is a ton of money, especially for a synth, but feel free to prove me wrong. Ill keep
checking my paypal account.
4 - Jupiter 80?? Never heard of it. And would I
want to pay £2500 anyway?
@ Necro
Ask Kwaidan to buy you it. If 5k
is nothing id bet he wouldn't even miss it.

From the original auction "I would also like the winner to pay CASH ON
COLLECTION only." Oh yeah I'm really gonna walk into a stranger's house with
£5,000 in small change in my pockets. A friend got "mugged" like this. Went to
pick up a sampler for a few hundred quid which was advertised in Loot. He was met at the
front door of the supposed residence of the seller (in a big block of flats) by two lads
and mugged there and then. When the police investigated and all that it was just an empty
property.

That was 4 years ago, not now. Since i know some people who are
involved with Roland's R&D. They told me for Roland to make a new Jupiter-8 with all
it's analogue discrete circuitry, it would cost a whopping £10'000 or $15'000
equivalent.
So what would you rather pay - £5k or £10k.
The price
of JP-8's are going to increase anyway, not come down. CS-80's are already at top premium
s/h prices of £10k+.
If you want a cheaper Jupiter, you go for either a JP-4
or JP-6. Or you buy a Juno or JX for the even cheaper options.
As for your
paypal account, you'll be waiting a long long time

It might be worth mentioning that £5k today is - effectively - a lot less than when it
was new. Back in the 70s when it came out, it was £3,500 which, by today's standards,
would be about £12,000 or more. So they were once £1000 s/h. So what?
Fashion, rarity and market demand for the thing has pushed the price up and at the end of
the day, something's only worth what people will pay for it and it seems people will pay
£5k for a JP8. I wouldn't - I'd rather drop £1,500 on a Prophet 08 or a Synthesisers.com
modular if I was buying an analogue synth - but there ya go ... someone will buy that JP8
for £5k simply for what it is. I think they're bonkers but good luck to 'em. That's assuming it's not a scam!

Getting a lot of 'so what' type of replies here. Heres me thinking this was a
place to discus this type of thing. Id have more luck discussing with the wife. Jupiter 4 sounds drastically different from any other synth ever made.
Certainly nothing like a J8. I have never heard the J6 but have been told they sound cold
in a good way though. Im not so sure any of the Jupiter range sound simlar to
each other. Damn, could have done with that 5 grand too.
