Grotbox Choices new

Hi all,
Mike Senior, in his "Mixing Secrets" book, exhorts the virtues of checking mixes on "grotbox" speakers ie little cheap computer style speakers.
Just wondering how many of you do this, and if you find it useful, and what make and speakers you use.

Experienced mixers MIGHT develop their art to the point where a mix made on their chosen monitors (and room) will reliably translate to any system. The rest of us check in a variety of playback situations!

My favourite first check is to leave the mix playing and move from my studio to the adjacent kitchen, maybe with the door nearly closed. Any problem tends to shout out - maybe because when in front of the speakers all that wonderful detail can obscure a basic imbalance! The next classic test is burning a CD to play in the car. I usually find those two sufficient, but sure, try anything else you've got!

I'm a little dubious about the value of grotty speakers in the same room as your "good" monitors. Because they ARE in the same room, and the room can make a lot of difference.

Also, don't rush the job. Live with the mix for a few days. Get opinions.

All good advice. An alternative to listening next door is to turn the volume right down - again, basic imbalances tend to stick out. Also, when coming back to a mix, take note of your first impressions. It's very easy to get used to things and accept them, when actually the initial suspicion that something needs fixing is probably correct.

Hi Tristan!

I suspect you haven’t yet read this long and involved thread in which a number of grot box candidates were explored, starting with the Avantone Mixcube, but then moving onto many more, including at least four by me

www.soundonsound.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=904662

It’s a good read!

Since I have installed the PMC IB1's, my Dynaudio Acoustics BM6P have become my grot boxes, lol. Well not really the BM6 has been a familiar aquaintance through most of my engineering career so they are very useful to me.

I think this practice is usually undertaken when you already have good monitoring available.
