laser on DVD-RW new

How long laser of DVD-RW can hold out and function well in the reading process?
every DVD-RW functions differently than the other?
There is a precise number of CDs that DVD-RW can read well? Estimated number?
How can I tell when the laser went wrong?
EAC can report it?

Depends on how much it is used.
I have burners that are 6 years old and still working fine.

If it doesn't work, replace the entire burner.
They are too cheap these days.
(The first cd burner I used was $3500US and only worked at 1X and blank cd's were $25US EACH.... over 15 years ago.)

Plextor used to have a piece of software that would tell you the number of hours a laser had been working for their drives (PX Info was its name I think). I suspect that other manufacturers may have the same thing for service engineers but they possibly don't publicise it.

I've only had one drive die on me due to laser problems so far but that's probably because that particular drive was used for duplicating hundreds of CD's.

Following on from Tim's post, I really ought to dig out my old Philips CDD 522 external drive and see if it still works. It cost me £1500 back in 1995. I was surprised to find that the computer that used to run it still worked when I fired it up a few months ago.
