Yamaha NS1000 Speakers

We don't normally permit links to ebay auctions on these forums, but I feel this is of
sufficient interest, and in a very good cause, that I'm bending the rule slightly on this
occasion.
Mahoobley is auctioning his late father's Yamaha NS-1000M speakers
on ebay. The relevant post is here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160571645685#ht_7
65wt_1139
The proceeds will be going to the Shooting Star Children's
Hospice, an organisation that his father worked for during his retirement.
The NS-1000M was developed in the same series of products that gave us the NS-10, and
shares similar design philosophies including a sealed cabinet. However, these three-way
mid-field speakers have a substantially better bass extension and were very hghly regarded
speakers in their day -- and still are highly thought of today, although relatively
rare.

Thanks very much for this Hugh - most appreciated!
Though I should add, the
money I get from this sale will be added on to the money I raise for a rather daunting
bike ride I'm doing in a few weeks - details of which are in the link in my signature
below. If anyone is feeling generous but doesn't need / get the speakers, feel free to
make a donation on the linked page

That's quite a
claim! In a Danish lager sort of way.
Now I have a dilemma. I was going to
base my embryonic new studio on my retro Tannoy Little Reds (with possibly a smidgeon of
sub from a Genelec 7070A), but this has got me thinking...
Well done on the
charity thing too.

i kind

Damn, I'm not
too late to cancel the auction and keep them for myself, am I?
Only joking
PLEASE NOTE:
Only acceptable method of payment on this ebay auction is cash

Hm. A bit OT, but are the Yamaha NS244s any good ? My mate left an old pair lying around
the office. Never plugged them in ....

Do ebay/paypal do anything for genuine charity sales? Such as waive or reduce the
fees? Seems unfair that a kids hospice will lose such a lot of money. They are not short
of a few quid.
Good show BTW! If they don't sell I will email you for a second
chance offer ;o)

I think they
don't if they have an arrangement already set up with the charity. When you set up the
auction, you can choose from a big list of charities to donate the money to, but the one
I'm doing this for wasn't on that list. I've dropped ebay an email regarding it but I
don't expect to get anything other than a scripted response.
For the sake of
a few quid, I can live with it - especially considering that the bidding has already far
exceeded my expectations!

I think Idris was hoping to exchange some of
his children for the speakers. I was implying that you might be unwilling having had first

I think you'll find it is more than a few quid! Check out the
ebay and paypal fees in their entirety - it is daylight buggery! "Well... sell them
elsewhere then..."... but seriously it isn't cheap. Out of principle you should avoid
paying them IMO.

Just a reminder that the auction ends at 10pm TONIGHT! Although I understand
people's reluctance to attempt to outbid the current clearly determined high bidder -
remember it is all for chariddy

I quite agree, I refuse to use Paypal either
as buyer or seller. I won't bid on anything where Paypal is the only acceptable method of
payment.

I used to feel like that until I started going along to the musical instrument auctions at
the local auction house. They charge the vendor 15% commission, + VAT. They also charge
the buyer 15% of the hammer price, + VAT. So, say something sells for £100. The vendor
gets £82 (though if VAT registered they can claim back £3). The buyer pays £118
(claiming back £3 if they're VAT registered). Gardner Houlgate get £30 clear. Compared
to that eBay with Paypal are almost cheap! That's not to say I enjoy paying
their fees or like the way they shuffle them around from time to time to disguise
increases (and I hate the way their auction format encourages sniping, it would be so easy
to cure). But they are a whole lot cheaper than other auction routes. CC

Yes, but buyers' premiums are and have been part of the auction scene for decades, so
prices find a level taking the premium into account.
With eBay you can
still have a negotiation. Volunteer to pay stupid fees to eBay (owners of Paypal), or
trust purchasers who eschew the whole sordid, nepotistic, rip-off conspiracy and will e.g.
talk about an internet bank credit.

Right.
Winning bidder made a very large bid very early on in the auction, in
fact it appeared I believe before this thread was posted.
Won the auction for
£820.
After winning, he admitted he didn't plan on bidding so much and
didn't have the money right now. Alarm bells. Should have cancelled it there and then.
Winning bidder was keen on me sending additional photos of the condition of the
item, wanted it to be aesthetically perfect. Really should have done this BEFORE bidding
BEFORE the auction ended! Photos were sent.
Winner arrived with van following
weekend having not looked at the photos. Complained there were scuffs on the corners I
hadn't mentioned in the auction (to be fair I was more interested in detailing the
performance quality rather than the box quality) and demanded a 10% reduction, which I
grudgingly did. He paid via Paypal which cost me an additional £25. Paypal have not
responded to requests to waive this fee as it was for charity. Took them back.
Worth mentioning I wasn't physically present during the exchange - the speakers were at
my mother's house in London, I was at my home in Nottingham.
A day later he
sends another email saying he's noticed additional scratches and wants another £100 back
or he'll bring them back. Being fed up already and having had other offers I say bring
them back then and I'll refund you. I'll even give him the full payment back and take the
£25 paypal hit as I'd rather have them back and give them to someone more deserving.
He does not reply to my email, nor to another one sent a week later asking for
his decision.
Today I sent him a final email saying having not heard back
from him I will consider our business complete, that he wishes to keep the speakers at the
price paid, and I am not interested in any further communication.
Feel pretty
crappy after all this. Feel messed around by someone when I was selling the speakers for
CHARITY. These speakers were my fathers and I feel I would have liked them to go to a
deserving home, which I don't feel that they have.
Also strongly suspect the
purchaser plans to sell them on at a profit. If anyone sees a pair of NS1000s for sale
from a company called My Audio Design (MAD England) you now know the story behind
them.
Anyway, thanks to Paul and the team and everyone who was interested but
didn't get a chance to bid due to this man! Thanks to those who made alternative offers
after things went pear shaped and thanks to those who made a donation to my fundraiser! I
have at still made about £720 which is still a very good amount I think! Lesson learned -
only use Ebay after considering all other options!

That's a sorry story. There are some miserable, slimy idiots out there, some of whom I've
encountered myself on both the bidding and selling sides.
The buyers who are
going to be trouble are invariably the ones who send a question after having won the
auction - it always means trouble. I had one 'lady' who bought a laptop PSU from me, then
decided to find out if it would work with her laptop after winning. Afer deciding it
wouldn't (and I'd already sent it) she contacted Paypal who refunded my money back to her
and I never saw the item, or a response from her again.
Rest assured that
everything you do, good or bad, pays back - of that I am sure. I think you handled it well
and were more than fair it seems. You did a good thing and it will return to you at some
point.
