Alternatives to the Juno 106?
      #912925 - 07/05/11 11:58 AM
Hey guys,

Would anyone here be able to help me out at all?

I'm looking to buy a modern synth that emulates those old swirly big pad sounds, and other SFX of the 80's movies . But can also produce some decent fat bass sound too. I guess, I woud be looking for something along the lines of the old "Juno 106" (but something more modern for convenience). And a synth with Oscillators - unlike the recent Juno's that Roland have releasing.

I was considering an Roland Gaiai or maybe a Novation ultra nova - I know they are no not "true analog" per se, and thus wouldn't sound as good. But I don't mind going thr VA route as long as it can produce some good sounds.

I know I could pick up an old Juno on ebay, but as they were built so long ago, I d don't want to keep having to get it fixed all the time.

Anyway, please let me know what you think of the Gaia or Ultranova, for the sounds I need, or please feel free to recomend some alternatives that you think could capture the old Juno 106 sound (or at least close to it!).

Many thanks,

Will.

The Roland JP8000 springs to mind.. can still be picked up for a bargain price (£3-400)

Might also be worth looking at a Nord Lead or even Modular G1 (£3-600)

If you want true analogue though, then you are limited a bit, but there is the DSI Tetra (£550) module

or if you can stretch to it, the Prophet 08(£1300-1800.

Don't get me wrong, old synths like the Junos are great, but the parts are getting increasingly hard to come by as many components are out of production and have been for some time.

What he said.

I would NOT even bother with a Ultranova or Gaia, if you like the Ultranova pick up a Supernova 2 rack for about £350...so much more for your money and instead of the Gaia stick with the JP.

Imo the Supernova's although nice lack the warmth of a analogue/good analogue modeling synth and their osc's sound very thin and plastic'e
Good for certain types of music for sure though.

As for interesting VA the Micro Q/Micro Q keyboard is cool..it's capable of a wide range of sounds and it's OSC's actually sound very nice when you detune them
