I was looking at my SH-101 the other day and looking at NI Komplete 7 and I'm thinking shall I let the SH-101 go? I don't use it that much, if I'm honest I keep it for novelty value. But, is this sacrilegious? Will my kids have a go at me about it in 15 years time when they're old enough to understand?!

Keep the SH-101? You may choose only one Keep it, it's a classic. Sell it if you don't use it and immerse yourself in the creative possibilities of Komplete 7.

I voted to keep it but to be honest what I'd do is irrelevant and so long as you're happy with the deal you should do what you think is best.

but, for what it's worth.......The SH101 won't really depreciate in real terms and may well go up in value. Komplete is well...complete: a very comprehensive set of tools. It is powerful and probably sounds great but needs a decent computer and will tie you into upgrade paths...Unlike the SH101, Komplete 7 is unlikely to be putting a smile on your face in 20 years. Having said that analogues will get harder to maintain and keep going and one day it will die....Spare parts are getting rarer so if you do keep the SH101 grab a couple of spare chips to keep it going for another 20 year.

I’ve got an immaculate Korg M1 that I bought new, but currently they only looks to be fetching £250, so it’s simply not worth me selling it except to gain some extra space

However, Roland SH-101‘s seem to go anywhere between £400 and £600 depending on condition, so I think it depends how much you want the money

I would sell it if you don't use it, I don't see the point in clinging to things you don't use...But I wouldn't replace it with a soft instrument, just me though

I like TAL's Bassline (101 VST), but i wish it would work in Samplitude, but it bloody won't!!

As much as I like/love hardware, if you're not using it and are only keeping it for novelty value, you may as well sell it so that someone else can really make use of it.

Will it rise in value over the years, probably. Will you learn to appreciate it more in years to come... I'm guessing not by what you have written above... So what's the point in hanging on to an expensive ornament unless you plan to use it as an investment?

Hell no.

When NI go out of business and the last viable machine to run it on has failed, you'll have nothing.

Not so with a tangible synth. Although, in fairness, eventually components will fail in them too.

I get so much use out of my SH. I suggest you go back to it and try to remember what made you buy it in the first place.

As an aside, I bet if this same poll was posted in the MRT forum, the result would be a resounding "yes, sell it"... In this part of the forum we're mostly crusty hardware fans with a love of knobby boxes, hence why the result is mostly "no, keep it".

It certainly is sacrilegious and you are likely to get more versatile and usable sounds out of the SH-101 than Komplete. Sell it if you want to, but its not economical to replace real hardware with software imitations. How much does NI Pro 52 go for these days on ebay?

All depends on what you're up to. If your music is saturated with analogue flavours then keep it (tho you don't seem to be using it much ...) as it probably will offer more individual, tweaked, parts, - easier, at least - than Komplete will (tho with a bit of effort you can tweak Komplete- it's just not as easy) If, however, you intend to write in lots of different styles then Komplete definitely is far more versatile. At least it plays chords ...

Yup - software does tend to 'disappear' after a few years, unless you hang on to the computer it ran on (and keep it working) or update every few years or so (paying again for the pleasure ...) so it's worth viewing hardware and software as different kinds of purchases. I keep hardware forever (or until it breaks down terminally) and I treat software as a temporary tool which has to pay for itself over the period of use - with a fat profit, hopefully. The golden rule round here is always to print everything as audio, at some point, so I'm not relying on some old piece of software to play a part back, in a few years time. In that sense, software is much like parts played by session musicians- if you don't record them as audio, they don't exist. Midi parts can at least still be played back off hardware, assuming you saved the sound - and the hardware still works, of course !

You'll be sad to lose the 101 - but Komplete does offer more possibilities of creating a full track which you can then sell to a library or elsewhere. Then you can buy back another 101, though you may be paying more for it than you sold yours for ...

I've had my SH101 from new, is it 28, 29 years ago? I've bought the individual items from NI that I actually want over the years too. To be honest the Reaktor/Massive/FM8 are used all the time and the Roland just sits there. But if the software corrupted I wouldn't be as upset as I would be if the SH101 died. I don't know where that gets you!!

NI make great sounds, I use their stuff all the time.

But 80s synths have soul.

I wouldn't in a million years get rid of my Moog Prodigy. Makes me happy every time I use it.
