well you're the one with an iPad in front of you - you tell us,
what is your audio output option?
Looks to me like it's mini-jack only....

The optional Camera Kit, allows you to connect USB devices.
Class compliant audio
interface should work, maybe?
Apogee's Jam has it's own connector for
input.
http://apogeedigital.com/products/jam.php
Apple also has
AV cable kits that provide RCA stereo output, pair that with the dock.
Check
iPad accessories at the Apple site.
Really surprised that there isn't product
for the purpose of connecting to DAWS.

connecting to DAWS. Thought maybe i was missing something?

I've not tried this yet but it's on my shortlist.

If it's convenience and freedom you are after, I use one of
these to hook up to my HiFi via Bluetooth. It's not as good as a wired connection but is
more than adequate.

If you have an apple airport express, you can do something similar using
wifi. I think you might be restricted to the apps that you can use doing it like this
whereas the QED bluetooth solution will play any audio generated by your iPad.

This will be amongst the best audio you'll get out of an iPad. It's class compliant,
requires a USB hub, has superb pres and uses the dock connector.

I've stated it before in other threads, this product only seems to exist in the NAMM
videos and I have yet to see any video of one actually in use. All footage so far is a
tour of the connectors and pots, but that is it. Alesis website still says awaiting Apple
approval. Once I see it in action, I may consider getting an iPad, but I'm still
waiting...
It is supposed to be a game changer!

I wonder if Apple reducing the power output of the dock connector has caused issues for
Alesis?

Yes this is proving more complicated than I expected, you would think that they would jump
at the chance of coming up with a simple audio interface for the iPad/iPad 2.
What are Apogee up to, it seems right up there street??

Have a look at this - iPad2 + Camera Connection Kit + Apogee One = great sound output!
and another
video
The Apogee Jam, made specifically for the iPad/iPad2 should be
available to buy soon.
Also, look at the link I posted earlier for other
tested options.

4 separate pieces of hardware and a power connection to get an audio/midi interface
working seems rather ugly for what essentially is supposed to be a portable and flexible
piece of equipment. I realise that this is supposed to show that it can be done, but there
seems no advantage over a laptop whatsoever. Also, is it possible to power your iPad when
using the camera connection kit?

I don't
think so, if it's anything like an ipod it's the same connector.
Rumors have
the iPad gaining a thunderbolt connection. That would probably require external power.
TB would also provide digital I/O.
For now the best hassle-free
solution for output seems to be the cable kit.
The OP was interested in an
iPad output, currently most products aimed at musicians are input solutions.
The Studiodock could fit the bill.

I would
agree with you, but the OP's requirement was not for a portable solution.

The OP is talking about using it in his studio, where he presumably has power, so various
powered solutions should be fine. It seems unlikely the iPad will present enough power to
run anything very sophisticated by itself. Regarding the RCA breakout cable,
this signal would presumable be a similar quality to the headphone outputs, given they'd
use the same converters. Bob

Ideally it would be nice to have something very simple and very portable too, you're right
most devices concentrate on getting a high quality signal into the iPad but surely that is
pointless unless you can get it out again at the same standard?
All the options
that seem to be available do indeed need power or at least an extra (powered) usb hub.
While this still remains "portable" it's definitely not ideal and seems to hark back to
the old days of dodgy connectors and multiple cables.
If manufacturers can come
up with studio quality inputs, surely they can make the connection that we would also need
studio quality out puts?
The iPad, to me, seems perfect for us lot as a
sketching, jamming, gigging and fun tool but until you can quickly, easily and securely
connect a studio quality out put it will never reach it's full potential.

Good points 6am, but I think it's also a matter of keeping things in perspective. I love my iPad for certain tasks, but I don't see it replacing my computer for
serious audio work. Bob

Maybe see it as a sketchpad and transfer the raw audio files into your DAW.

Agreed
- In the studio, you already have the CPU grunt and software you need. To me, the iPad
comes into its own by providing a handy touch interface to that existing environment and
not necessarily as a DAW or VST instrument. The main uses for me are controlling Cubase
via the steinberg app, Omnisphere using their app and using AirDisplay to control anything
else. The Omnisphere app in particular is a fantastic example of how this technology
should work in my opinion.
