Decent studio in Derby? new
      #914962 - 18/05/11 09:17 PM
Any recommendations? I have a friend there with a full guitar/bass/drums band looking to do a 4 track EP.

Budgets are tight (obviously!) but they want to do something sooner rather than later. They know Dubrek and Snug but find themselves in a bit of a queue.

Would consider a man-with-a-rig for a location recording in the right room...

Hi Steve,

with regards to Derby, we rehearse there all the time and having used quite a few of the studios I can highly recommend The Musicshed. They're a great bunch of guys (especially Bob and Gaz) and have a great facility there. I think they're doing some offers on recording throughout May but don't quote me on that.

The website is here, http://www.musicshed.co.uk/

Also (this might help!) they are really handily located near the railway station, theres plenty of parking and its all on one level (trust me if they know some of the Derby studios then they'll know what I mean!!)

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

Al

Hmm, you'll have to kill me for the identity, but here's what my frind/client says of Musicshed:

Quote:

We've rehearsed a couple of times at Music Shed and in all honestly I couldn't have been more disappointed with them. Out of a 2 hour slot we got 1hr 15 playing time because they couldn't find us kit that worked or cymbal stands that weren't broken even though we'd booked the kit and the room well in advance. No apology or discount was offered, infact the words "tough [ ****** ]" were uttered on one occasion. They moved us into a different room half way through, wasting more time! The general set up of the place seemed pretty shoddy compared to some of the other spaces we have used...

What goes around comes around, I guess...

I have to agree, I filled in on guitar for a band who rehearsed there and I have to say the rehearsal rooms were the worst sounding rooms I'd ever played in. If their knowledge of acoustics is really that poor I can't imagine a decent recording ever coming out of there. Just my 2p though.

Not quite Abbey Road, but they could try Abbey Lane for a rough and ready demo. I would personally use the snug if I could, knowing the guy who originally set it up (when it was the hive) and having produced in there before, it's got a good sounding live room, a well treated control room, although I don't (think I) know any of the current engineers.

I used to hire their practice rooms when was a Derby resident, 5+ years ago... was ok place, never used the actual studio though.

I've also used Arch Recordings in Burton, and came away with a demo that was much better than I expected. What's the band's setup anyway?

I hope it's not a metal band you are trying to record.

You can't do Heavy Metal in Derby.
