Have been reading up on the Oktava Ml 52-02. Seems to be an interesting
microphone. Anyone with any experience using it? Worth the cash or would I be better going
with something else?

I had one of the Electro-Harmonix badged versions (not sure if it was the 52-02, probably
the older 52) and couldn't get on with it at all. It was very dark yet also very gritty
and harsh, not smooth like I would expect a good ribbon to be. Meybe I just got unlucky.

Not unlucky Sam, again the older 52 (so this may not be fair) those stylish looking ribs
over the top of the dome can be played with your fingers, much like one of those small
African thumb pianos, but really out of tune. This seems to add a weird background
wash of very unmusical harmonics to anything loud. And yes, gritty and harsh, which
may be partly the transformer.
The ML 53 (Same ribbon motor in in a 319 body
with a Lundahl transformer) looks like a confession to the above sins.
However,
maybe the ML 52-02 is the new 'we fixed it' version.
