Mesa TA-15 or Egnater Rebel 30?
      #922882 - 27/06/11 07:12 PM
I really am having trouble deciding between these two amps. I set out looking for a lower wattage replacement for my orange rockerverb 50 head. I'm looking for something small but reasonably powerful I can use in the studio and at small venues too.

I've tried the ta-15 and I do really like it, the egnater I've only heard demos but from the reviews and such it seems like it might be just right. I'm looking for a fender like clean sound with lots of headroom and a second channel with loads of gain. The ta-15 doesn't really have enough gain for metal unlike my orange.

Does anybody have any experience of either amps they could use to help sway me? Or perhaps a third option?

My only issue with the mesa is it only has 8 ohm and 4 ohm outs and my cab is 16 ohms.

Ouch!!

Difficult call. Usually when offered a choice between two I like the option of having both, but this is a little more complicated...

Well, I am a long term Orange fan

The Rockerverb 50 is a fine tool, and it seems that it ticks plenty of boxes for you. Have you considered some form of power soak or attenuator to use with the Orange instead? I love the clean sound from Orange amps (I have an early 70's graphic 120, and with the gain pulled back it sounds lovely. Not a Fender but plenty of clean headroom.) and if you love the hi gain sounds so much, you won't find anything else quite the same.

Sorry if that puts a spanner in the works, but it's always a good rule of thumb to remember that you bought your current gear for a reason. No matter what has happened since, when it came to putting your hand in your pocket and handing over the cash (or signing the agreement), you shopped around and decided it was what you wanted.

Hi Andy, Its definitely not going to be an easy decision getting rid of the orange, I did consider a power soak but ideally I'm looking to downsize I can't afford to buy something new as I'd be looking to sell the orange to pay for the new head. I'm also really attracted to the idea of getting a small head which I can carry over my shoulder.

I did try the Orange th-30 head yesterday, which I preferred to mine, nicer clean sound and pretty much the same kind of gain channel although just the shape knob for tone sculpting.

I'm thinking of going with the mesa and then trading in if it doesn't work out.

In an ideal situation I'd have a fender for the clean and then the orange gain channel.

I hated the Egnater, haven't tried the Mesa TA. I love the Orange TT and they also have a new version with an fx loop, so you might want to look it over.

Hey 4trackmadman, what was it you didn't like about the Egnater? I've gone for the Mesa TA-15 will let you know who I get on with it. I tried the tiny terror but it didn't have the high headroom sparkly clean I was looking for, nice overdriven tones though but the one I tried was quite noisy too which would be a downside for recording.

Maybe the Engl Gigmaster, Hughes&Kettner Tubemeister, or one of the RAT modified amps could be of interest?
