Worth Joining TAXI? new
      #922112 - 23/06/11 05:38 PM
As a composer with music used on some smaller Tv things, is it worth joining TAXI?

I always see the ads around, and they look a little too good to be true.. so wondered if anyone here is a member?

Do they take existing music and try and 'place' it in the US, or do they get you 'jobs' for programmes needing music?

Whilst I am sure they exist, I have never actually met anyone who has had success with TAXI.

Personally, I have a problem with a business model that involves 'experts' deciding what, if anything, will be passed on to the end user for consideration. If I am paying, I sure as hell want the relevant parties to hear it.

Most scams take advantage of people's gullibility and/or greed, but Taxi preys on hopes, dreams and insecurities.

It's a despicable organisation. Avoid at all costs.

There are about two dozen companies I could insert into that sentence!! They make their money from your fee's ... metabolising dreams into donuts.

Agreed!

As soon as you give someone some money, you've just devalued yourself.

Get involved in situations where you are close to the action.

A pm is fine!

I think a good rule of thumb is "anybody who asks you for money up-front".

No, you beat me, and narcoman beat both of us!

I remember the first time I was warned about what they called "song sharks" by reps of the performing rights society in Canada. It was probably 25 years ago!

Simple business model really: take demo and fee from artist, bin demo, pocket fee. Repeat.

I'd go with the former, but with one caveat- if you're US, and you can write MOR country songs, or US TV friendly media music, you just make a few bucks, eventually, if you're lucky. In very rare cases (I do know of a couple) you can make a few dollars more than the money you've paid to Taxi. For everyone else- forget it. If you must try these kinds of people, then maybe- just- it's worth taking a look at Music Xray, who at least have the honesty of putting the names and companies of their 'opportunities' out there on the listings. Taxi, Broadjam, etc- seriously, how are we to know whether these things are on the level when you never know who the 'clients' are, or even if the 'gigs' actually exist ?

Better off buying a taxi, you could at least make a living that way.
