Help Please, imported USA Moog LP II & Mackie HR824, what power lead to use in UK?
      #923470 - 29/06/11 07:38 PM
Hi,
I have a few questions if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

I have just bought a US imported Moog Little Phatty Stage II.
The supplied USA kettle lead looks like this:

It says in the manual that it has a universal power supply.

So please can anyone 100% confirm if I can plug a UK kettle lead in to power it?

If the answer is yes, does it matter which one I get? I noticed they come in various fuse sizes.

Or advice on a adaptor that would change the mains plug end of the lead to fit UK plug sockets?

Secondly I have a second hand pair of Mackie HR824s.
I'm not sure if the previous owner originally imported them from the US or not, they came with US Power Cables:

on the back of the monitors it says:

With the Mackies I did plug in a UK kettle lead from another piece of equipment and they appear to work.

But my question is, is there a certain type of UK kettle lead I should purchase for them?

And like the Moog advice on a adaptor that would change the mains plug end of the US lead to fit UK plug sockets?

As said above any help much appreciated.
Cheers,

If a piece of gear states that it has a "universal" power supply or accepts 230v, you're OK on UK power.

Throw away any supplied lead with anything except a 3-pin UK mains plug on the supply end. It looks as if you need bog-standard IEC connectors for the equipment end. These are commonly supplied with just about every portable appliance sold in the UK. Haven't you got a box full of them? :-) If not, any electrical shop will sell you some.

Though the term is often used loosely, the "kettle" plug is actually a heat-resistant variant of this with a slightly different shape. Cut-outs align with lugs on a kettle, preventing the low-temperature version from being used.

There's not much studio gear that needs more than a 3 amp fuse. The Moog certainlt won't. The Mackies - well, there's a pair here. Let's have a look. It says 150W on the back. Volts divided by Watts = Amps. Yeah - a 3 amp fuse will be plenty!

That's right for sure. I got an Apogee Ensamble in the States last year, checked it was universal (it was), gave away the supplied power lead, plugged in a standard IEC connector with a UK plug on it and away we went. No worries. You have to check every time though because some things you can blow up - For example I know that if I take my UK built guitar amp to the States I will need to have some adjustments made to the power supply within. Not a big deal unless I don't do it!
