I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 connected to a Dell Laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. When I
record I get a horrible distortion. The pre-amps aren't clipping and the signal isn't too
hot as the waveforms are not clipping. The distortion is present when using either Mic or
Line connections.
The pre-amps seem fine as I get no distortion when monitoring
straight through the interface, only when recording.
I have the latest drivers
installed and have also tried using ASIO4All but still the same problem.

And you've also tried Focusrites own drivers as well as ASIO4ALL?
I've got a
Saff6 using a 2yr old Dell desktop and never had any issues with it. Not sure if there has
been a recent driver update on the Focusrite site... might be worth investigating. Their
support is normally pretty good.

You stole my
question, if it's cubase related, I might be of use. Do you get a 'recording in a cave'
sound - (technical term)? Or it could just be Dellitis. Check your connections and
drivers. I've got one but I don't use it, does it have +4 -10 button? or does your mic
have one?

I have used (and continue
to) the Focusrite drivers (v1.9 i think). I am recording into Live and Reaper. Levels are
around -18db on screen. The clip lights dont show on the interface

I had a similar problem with a Saffire Pro 24 interface - distorted sound (and not being
recognised consistently). After a friendly but lengthy email conversation, FR repaired it.
It now works well on my home Mac Pro, but still has issues with machines at
work.
During my investigation, I noticed a few Saffire users with distortion
issues. Perhaps contact FR?

Thanks I will do. I was thinking/hoping it wasn't a HW failure as it works
fine when monitoring through the pre-amps. However I suppose it could be an issue at the
A/D end when sending the signal through the USB output.
