Setting Up PA..advice needed new
      #925200 - 07/07/11 10:53 PM
Hi All

I run a function band. Our ex singer used to do all the PA and as he has now left it's down to me! Please would anyone like to advise the best (most effective?) way to set up the following equipment:

2 x RCF Art series active speakers (480w each)
2 x Wharfedale Titan Pro 12" Bass Bins (250W each)
12 or 16 channel passive mixer, yet to buy, but either Yamaha or Soundcraft likely maker.

We play a mix of pop, bit of rock, motown, disco, party stuff. I'd appreciate guidance on setting the filters on the bins etc. as it's not something I've been involved with in bands I have played in before. Any other help or guidance gratefully received!

Cheers folks

Ian

Mixer out L/R via screened XLR leads (mic leads) into the bass speakers HP (high pass) out from the Titans (again screened XLRs) to the inputs on the top speakers.

The bass speakers are really under powered for the top end, though. To run the system in a safe and balanced way would not be making the most of it.

Consider investing in an active crossover (search the forum, there's lots of q?s about this) and a pair of bins more suited to the tops.

(I like Soundcraft, not everybody does).

Yup! That leapt out at me when I read the post - one of the reasons I haven't responded before...

Is this a typo? Didn't realise that Soundcraft were in this market...

I think that refers to the choice between Soundcraft or Yamaha mixers mentioned in the first post.

I'd be happy with either but would be tempted to go for an Allen and Heath Zed series or mixwiz, depending on needs and budget. I really like my Soundcraft M12 though it doesn't do groups, and while I've not used Yamaha mixers in anger by all accounts they're perfectly OK.

I went for an A&H GL2400 as my main live mixer and haven't regretted it beyond the bulk and weight of a 32-channel mixer. But it helps justify what I charge for some events ...

Ah yes! You're probably right...

I have Soundcraft, Yamaha and A&H.... Soundcraft OK, but always feels a bit flimsy... Yamaha (MG206) has compressors on the first 8 channels which are easy to use and do the biz and I've been happy with it for the three years I've had it. Couple of 'downers' (for me)... PFL has no active light so it's easy to leave one of the 'shallow-travel' buttons depressed. Groups are two stereo groups on stereo faders. It packs a lot into the space so always a bit cramped. A&H is a ZED and my initial impressions are that it is a cut-above either the S'craft or the Yamaha. Very solid build quality and doesn't feel at all cramped... plus, of course, 100mm faders and A&H EQ.

Ah, yes. Note to self - think in straight lines.

Thanks guys for that. I realise the Titans are outclassed and performed by the RCF's. We bought the Titans with the intention of matching them to Titan tops but the RCF's came up at a great price so couldn't resist. We will upgrade the Titans in due course.

One last question. The Titans have a HP filter knob on the outputs. What is the best setting for this? It covers the range 80Hz-200Hz.

Cheers guys
