Quantec Yardstick for free? Is this possible? new

Having read Hugh's glowing review of the £4000+ hardware Yardstick, I thought people might be interested in trying a software version which claims to be sonically identical: at least to impulse responses taken from an original Yardstick.

It's a Reaktor instrument so it's not exactly free: you'll need NI Reaktor to make it work.

I've been using it over the past year or so though, and it is very good at giving a sense of being in a real (and pleasing) acoustic space - especially on close miked drums.

Don't know if it matches the real thing though: Hugh?

(EDIT: the newer hardware Yardsticks are supposedly different and better than the old ones - at least according to the linked page - the plug-in only models the old version - still sounds good though!).

I didn't try the Quantec, and I've not tried the Reaktor one... but in his review, Hugh did specifically state that the Yardstick does something that convolution reverbs can't do — which suggests that comparing the Reaktor version with Quantec impulses is perhaps not the best approach. But then again, "if it sounds right..."

I own Reaktor and have never really looked into the community made stuff before now.

Wow, there's a lot of free stuff out there !

Good point.

And then again: if one algorithmic reverb (which the Reaktor one is) produces exactly the same IR as another algorithmic reverb (i.e. the Quantec), with the same settings on both, then this does at least show that the algorithms *could be* the same.
