iZotope Ozone 4. Alternatives? new
      #926643 - 16/07/11 12:43 AM
I'm just coming to the end of the free 10 trial of Ozone 4 & I have to admit to being a bit of a fan. Whilst there isn't really anything in there I haven't already got in some or other format, I'm really loving the simplicity of it, especially the way the individual components intergrate with each other.

Even the pre-sets all seem to be a really well thought out starting point for those of us with little or no mastering knowledge and a less than ideal monitor set-up. Tracks I've completed with it so far translate much better onto other sytems better than anything I've done before.

I'm sorely tempted to click 'authorise' & face the wrath of she who controls the budget (apparently I've been over-indulged recently), but I just wondered whether there are any comperable products I should investigate first.

Any suggestions?

I have TRacks and have used Ozone for a couple of releases. Some of the new TRacks processors are really nice sounding, but I can never decide that it it better than Ozone. Izotope has actually convinced me that I don't want interfaces with knobs and photo-realistic front panels - I want graphs that I can drag and find that I work far more intuitively this way than using a control surface these days. The only downside for me is that I sometimes struggle to get back to basics - turn everything off and actually listen to what each component is doing. I also get caught-up in hearing vintage nice from an antiqued front panel - the Ozone interface doesn't give you anywhere to hide. Personally, I'd authorise it and get Alloy at the same time!

Don't bother to thank me just in case your missus finds this and tracks me down!

Hi Andi, I think you've sold it. I agree the interface is so refreshing, compared to the pseudo-retro stuff I've been using, but also it actually lets you see the effect in action. I'm always wondering how often I'm inserting compressors etc which are having no effect (other than eating up CPU), simply because I think that's what I'm supposed have in place. With Ozone you can actually see when, how much, and for how long you're effecting the signal. I genuinely feel I've learned more in the last 10 days than the last 10 years.

Plus my Mum has stumped up £100 funding so I'm spared a lifetime of eternal martyrdom.

Alloy is so tempting I'm not even going to download the trial version!
