recording solo Bach in mono or stereo

I would be very grateful for any advice on whether it is preferable to record a solo
instrument, in this case solo violin, or viola or cello, in stereo or mono. I have only
one terrific mic and preamp for just that purpose (Royer R122V and Grace pre). I will
record in Pro Tools. I want to record a Bach Cello suite as performed on viola, and a Bach
Solo Violin Partita. Is there any advantage to recording these projects with two mics, or
more, or will one suffice? Thanks so much, I really appreciate it.

If you are recording in a small, dead room go for one great mic and pre amp (and then find
the best software verb you can).
If you are recording in a great acoustic space
then it would be a crime not to do it in CO-I.
IMHO. Dave.

What Dave said, only it would be a crime not to do it in a good acoustic! Which by default
means working in stereo. Bob

...but, my god that R122v is the dogs nuts for this job surely??? Maybe, given
the quality of your existing mic and pre, you should spot with those, and then hire a
coincident array of some kind, for stereo ambience. I often use KM184's for this job, or a
pair of my Collettes in MS (mk4/mk21 and mk8 caps). Envy you that rig SG....

Or hire another Royer or an MS rig to go with it?
Dave.

Thank you to all who responded. I have been a musician for many years, but I am new to
recording techniques. I am studying quite a bit, however, and need to venture into the
practical reality of actually recording! So, all the info is useful and very much
appreciated. As it happens, for logistical and practical reasons the Bach Suite performed
on the viola (me) will be done in dead room - my studio. When I purchased the Royer, one
of the Royer staff with whom I spoke before making the purchase actually suggested a dead
room, or something close to it. I have only practiced with the Royer and have been blown
away by the sound. Lastly, the last post mentioned an S Gordon who's music he heard. It
wasn't me. Thanks again to all. SG.
